A Rivian VIN starts with 7FC on trucks such as the R1T and commercial vans, or 7PD on MPVs such as the R1S. Positions 4-8 carry the model, battery pack and motor layout, 9 is the check digit, 10 is the model year, and 11 is the plant. So far that plant letter has been N for Normal, Illinois. Decode it on vPIC, then run recalls and a history report before you pay for a used EV truck.
We ran Rivian patterns through NHTSA's free vPIC decoder in mid October 2026 because classified ads still mix R1T and R1S codes, and because Amazon EDV vans share the 7FC truck WMI. Rivian's own 49 CFR filings separate truck-type 7FC from MPV-type 7PD, and position 4 is how you tell an R1T from a delivery van. If the 17 positions are new, start with how to decode a VIN. After the decode, clear campaigns with our Rivian recall check by VIN.
Positions 1-3: 7FC trucks, 7PD SUVs
vPIC maps 7FC to Rivian Automotive LLC trucks and 7PD to Rivian multipurpose vehicles. A clean 2024 R1T Adventure pattern starting 7FCTGBAA decoded to Normal, Illinois, pickup body, Adventure trim, battery-electric, AWD. A 2022 R1T Launch Edition starting 7FCTGAAL returned the same plant with Launch Edition trim and a battery capacity field around 128.9 kWh. A 2024 R1S Adventure starting 7PDSGBAA came back as an SUV/MPV with Adventure trim, still Normal. So a listing that calls every Rivian an "R1T" while the VIN starts 7PD is already wrong on the badge.
Positions 4-8: R1T, R1S, pack and motors
Position 4 is the blunt model clue in Rivian's filings: T for R1T pickup, S for R1S SUV, with other letters reserved for EDV and RCV delivery vans under the same 7FC truck WMI. Later characters encode GVWR band, battery and motor layout, and trim. In our runs, Adventure and Launch Edition filled the trim field when the pattern matched Rivian's submitted tables. Honestly, a dual-motor Large Pack truck and a quad-motor truck can look identical in a dark lot, so read the middle block and the software screen instead of trusting the ad headline. Commercial van codes under 7FC are easy to miss if you only glance at the first three characters. An EDV that sat in delivery service can still look like a consumer truck in photos cropped above the roof rack line.
Positions 9-11: check digit, year and Normal, IL
Position 9 is the check digit under 49 CFR 565.15. Our 2024 R1T sample decoded with a clean check digit. Position 10 is the model year (N was 2022, R was 2024, S was 2025 in samples). Position 11 has been N for Normal, Illinois across the consumer R1 filings we checked. If a seller invents a second Rivian plant story for a U.S. R1T or R1S, ask them to show the door jamb sticker next to the windshield plate.
Recalls that follow Rivian VINs
Always run the full VIN. Some Rivian fixes are over-the-air, and some need a service visit. NHTSA recall 23V-783 is one of the early fastener-era campaigns on R1 trucks, and 25V-585 covers Highway Assist software on later builds. Look, an R1S with an incomplete software campaign is not "already updated" until Rivian service or the truck's own version screen says so. We've seen private-sale screenshots that show a closed campaign on a different VIN. Run yours.
After the decode: history, and what it costs
For model context, Car and Driver's R1T page and Consumer Reports on Rivian are useful starting points. A VIN decode will not show a salvage brand, a flood wash or a rolled-back odometer. Those come from the feeds CARFAX describes. Pull your own copy. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. A seller PDF with no VIN printed on it is worth nothing on a truck this expensive.
