Used Tesla Model X Buying Guide: Years, Range, Recalls

A used Tesla Model X is worth buying if you want a fast seven-seat EV and you check two things before money moves: the VIN's open recalls and the battery's real range. Tesla stopped building the Model X in May 2026, so every one you find now is used, and the cars fall into two groups: the original 2016-2020 design and the refreshed 2021-plus cars with new interiors and the Plaid option. In mid October 2026, the early cars have the hardware recalls that matter most, like 20V-062 for corroding power steering bolts and 21V-035 for the failing screen memory chip.

Elon Musk said on Tesla's January 2026 earnings call that the company would end Model S and X production and turn the Fremont line over to Optimus robots, as CNBC reported. TechCrunch quoted him promising support for existing owners "for as long as people have the vehicles," and Quartz reported in May that the last cars had been built. Parts and service still run through Tesla. If you are also looking at the sedan or a smaller SUV, see our used Tesla Model S buying guide and used Tesla Model Y buying guide.

Early cars versus the refresh

Consumer Reports calls the Model X more showy than practical. The rear falcon wing doors open up and out of the way but take their time, and the second-row seats do not fold. CR says the 90-kWh car it tested early on had a realistic 230-mile range. A freshening, which CR dates to 2022 and NHTSA files treat as 2021-plus, brought a new cabin, the yoke-style wheel option, no stalks, and the Plaid. CR lists the Plaid at 1,020 hp and 314 miles of range. For 2026, CR says range rose to 352 miles from 329, adaptive headlights arrived, and a round wheel became standard.

Car and Driver lists 670 hp for the dual-motor car, a 352-mile EPA estimate, 335 for the Plaid, and a 5,000-pound tow rating. Its base Model X covered 300 miles on C&D's highway range test. Treat any range figure on a used car as a ceiling, not a promise. A pack that has lost capacity shows up in the car's own range estimate at full charge, and our guide to EV battery health on CARFAX covers what a history report can and cannot tell you.

Recalls on 2016-2020 cars

NHTSA recall 20V-062 covers about 14,113 2015-2016 Model X cars whose aluminum bolts holding the power steering assist motor can corrode and break, reducing or cutting assist. Tesla replaces them with coated steel bolts and replaces the steering gear if a bolt is broken. 21V-035 covers about 134,951 2012-2018 Model S and 2016-2018 Model X cars whose 8GB eMMC memory chip wears out and knocks out center display functions, which NHTSA says can include the rearview camera, defrost settings, and turn signal lights. Tesla replaces the daughterboard. 22V-818 covers about 40,168 2017-2021 S and X cars that can lose power steering assist on rough roads or after a pothole, fixed over the air. Early 2016 cars also had 16V-192, a third-row seat back that can move forward in a crash, and 17V-639, a second-row seat back that may not latch.

Recalls on 2021-plus cars

The refreshed X had a run of restraint recalls. 23V-488 covers about 15,869 2021-2023 S and X cars whose front seat belts may not be attached to the pretensioner anchors, which means the belt can detach. Tesla Service inspects and reconnects or replaces them. 22V-233 covers about 7,289 2021-2022 Model X cars whose front curtain air bags may not deploy right with the windows down, and Tesla replaces them. 21V-868 and 24V-967 cover driver air bags that can tear on deployment. Software fixes are a long list: 22V-843 recalibrated the passenger air bag control module on about 29,348 2021-2023 Model X cars, 23V-679 fixed a missing low brake fluid warning on about 54,676, and 23V-862 fixed door locks that could release in a crash on about 120,423 S and X cars.

Over-the-air fixes are easy to confirm, but hardware fixes need a service visit, and a car that sat offline at a body shop or an auction for months can miss both. Look, a salvage Model X with a cheap price and a clean-looking screen is the trap. Read our Tesla salvage title battery risks guide before bidding on one, and run every VIN through our Tesla recall check by VIN walkthrough.

History and price

A recall lookup will not show accident repairs, a branded title, or a battery swap. Pull the history report and match the mileage with the car's own odometer. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Prices change, so confirm at checkout. We are a licensed reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian, and a site promising a "free full report" is not handing you a real one.
