A used Volvo XC90 is a smart three-row luxury buy if you want a calm, safe cabin and can live with middling power, and the main decision is whether to take a plug-in hybrid. Every XC90 since 2016 is the same second generation, refreshed for 2025, so you are choosing between turbo four-cylinder gas versions and the T8 plug-in. In mid October 2026, any 2020-2022 plug-in XC90 needs two VIN checks first: 25V-179 for a battery short that can cause a fire, and 25V-392 for brake loss in "B" mode.
Consumer Reports calls the 2016 redesign "a much nicer vehicle" and praises the flexible seven-seat interior and long safety list, but finds the touch screen unintuitive and the ride stiff unless you get the optional air suspension. Car and Driver's 2016 review also notes the XC90 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick and a five-star NHTSA rating that year. Powertrains by year
Early trucks came as the T5, a 250-hp turbo 2.0-liter offered with front- or all-wheel drive, or the T6, which adds a supercharger for 316 hp and all-wheel drive. CR measured 20 mpg overall on the T6. The T8 plug-in hybrid sat at the top. Later XC90s moved to mild-hybrid B5 and B6 versions with a 48-volt system, and Car and Driver lists 247 hp for the B5 and 295 hp for the B6, all with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Towing is 5,000 pounds on the B6 but 4,000 on the B5, which matters if you pull a camper.
CR says blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert became standard for 2018, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge display arrived for 2020, along with a bigger 11.6-kWh battery for the plug-in. Early plug-ins were rated around 14 miles of electric range. The 2025 refresh brought an 11.2-inch center screen, revised styling, and standard Pilot Assist, and Volvo stopped calling the plug-in "Recharge." CR also notes Volvo sold the older design as a 2025 model into early 2025, so check which one you are looking at.
Plug-in hybrid recalls first
25V-179 covers about 7,483 2020-2022 Volvo plug-ins, including XC90s, whose high-voltage battery module can short while parked fully charged, raising the risk of a fire. Volvo told owners not to charge until dealers inspected and replaced the module as needed and updated the monitoring software. 25V-392 covers about 11,469 Volvos, including 2020-2026 XC90 plug-ins, that can lose brake function while coasting downhill in "B" mode. The fix is a brake module software update, over the air or at a dealer, and until then owners were told not to use B mode. Honestly, if a seller of a T8 cannot tell you whether either is done, walk.
Recalls on every XC90
Camera software is the biggest by count. 25V-908 covers about 413,151 Volvos, including 2023-2025 XC90s, whose rearview camera image may not show in reverse. It replaces 25V-282, and cars fixed under the old number need the new update. 23V-827 covers about 2,911 2015-2024 XC90s whose second-row seat belt buckle and lower anchor bolts may not be tight. 20V-144 covers about 121,605 2019-2020 Volvos whose automatic emergency braking may not detect obstacles because of a software and hardware mismatch, and 21V-414 covers about 85,550 2019-2020 cars whose low-pressure fuel pump can blow a fuse and stall the engine. 22V-793 covers about 15,674 2022-2023 cars with engine control software that can stop the gas engine from starting.
The first model years have their own items. 19V-308 covers about 34,006 2016 XC90s with a coolant bleeder hose that can crack, and Volvo's filing says leaked coolant can soak the catalytic converter heat shield insulation and catch fire. 15V-497 covers 3,911 2016 trucks whose third-row curtain air bags may not fully inflate, and 17V-104 covers about 10,476 2017 XC90, S90, and V90 Cross Country cars whose curtain air bag bolts can break. On 2016-2017 trucks, 16V-690 is an air conditioner drain hose that can leak water into the cabin, which Volvo says can affect air bag deployment. Wet carpet in an early XC90 is a reason to check that one, and to think about flood history too.
VIN, history, and price
Run the VIN with our Volvo recall check by VIN guide. A recall screen will not show accident repairs, and a luxury SUV with expensive sensors behind the front and rear fascias is worth a closer look. Our guide on how to read a CARFAX report covers what damage and service lines mean. New XC90s came with complimentary maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, per Car and Driver, so a car with gaps in that window deserves questions. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail.
