To check Volvo recalls on a used XC90, XC60, or S60, run the 17-digit VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup and through Volvo's owner support channels, then ask a Volvo dealer for the campaign printout. Incomplete campaigns are free repairs the car still owes you. In mid October 2026, plug-in hybrid shoppers should treat the brake-software recall as urgent, and almost every recent XC60 or XC90 should be checked for the rearview camera software redo.
Volvo files under Volvo Car USA, and some campaigns only hit PHEV or mild-hybrid VINs even when the badge looks identical in a listing photo. When we pulled Volvo's NHTSA filings on October 13, 2026, the same model year XC60 showed different campaigns depending on whether it was a gas mild hybrid or a plug-in. Decode first, then search.
How to run a Volvo VIN
Match the windshield VIN to the door sticker. Our guide on checking recalls by VIN on NHTSA shows how to read incomplete versus completed lines. Decode the build with our Volvo VIN decoder so you know whether the car is a PHEV before you argue with a seller about software updates. Ask the dealer to print open campaigns by VIN, because an over-the-air fix that never finished still shows as open until the module reports success.
The PHEV brake software recall you should not shrug off
NHTSA recall 25V-392, filed June 12, 2025, covers about 11,469 hybrid and electric Volvos, including 2020-2026 XC90 PHEV, 2022-2026 XC60 PHEV, and 2023-2025 S60 PHEV models. In certain downhill coasting scenarios while using "B" mode or One Pedal Drive, the vehicle may lose brake function. Volvo's remedy is brake-module software, delivered over the air or at a dealer. Until it is done, owners are told not to use B mode on plug-ins or One Pedal Drive on pure EVs. Look, a private seller who "turned that mode off once" has not closed the campaign.
Rearview camera redo and seat belt campaigns
25V-908 covers about 413,151 vehicles, including 2022-2025 XC60, 2023-2025 S60, and 2023-2025 XC90 models, whose rearview camera may not display in reverse. It replaces earlier recall 25V-282, and cars already fixed under that older number still need the new software. Owner letters went out February 24, 2026. Volvo code is R10333.
On brand-new 2026 mild hybrids, 25V-589 covers about 1,357 XC90 and XC60 MHEV vehicles (plus V90CC and V60CC) whose front seat belt retractor torsion bars may have been damaged in production. Dealers replace both front retractors. Letters went out November 17, 2025. Tiny population, but a VIN hit is a hard stop until it is fixed.
Older plug-in battery and S60 air bag items
25V-179 covers about 7,483 2020-2022 XC60, XC90, and S60 plug-ins (plus related S90 and V60 PHEVs) whose high-voltage battery may short when fully charged and parked. Owners were told not to charge until the module is inspected or replaced and monitoring software is installed. On gas S60 sedans from 2019-2024, 23V-780 covers a small batch of 346 cars whose passenger air bag may not be secured properly. We've seen sellers treat tiny campaigns as noise. If the VIN is in the list, it is not noise.
How open status shows up in a real negotiation
Bring the NHTSA printout to the test drive and ask the seller to open the same VIN on their phone. If the listing says "all recalls completed" and NHTSA still shows incomplete for 25V-392 or 25V-908, stop and make completion a written condition of sale. Software campaigns can finish overnight after an OTA, so re-check the morning you sign. Paper repair orders beat screenshots every time.
History report and price
Recalls do not show flood brands, odometer problems, or many accidents. CARFAX says its reports cover title brands, odometer readings, ownership, and reported accidents, and our guide on how to read a CARFAX report helps sort the lines. As of mid October 2026, CARFAX through us is about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. A cheap plug-in with a full charge cable in the trunk and a "do not charge" letter still in the glovebox is not a bargain.
