A used Dodge Durango is a good pick if you want a three-row SUV that tows like a truck, and the safest bet is a 2014-or-newer truck with the eight-speed automatic and every recall closed. The current generation started with the 2011 model and has been updated rather than replaced ever since, so your real choices are year range and engine: the 3.6-liter V6, the 5.7 Hemi, or the bigger V8s. In mid October 2026, check 24V-838 on 2018-2019 trucks and 26V-528 on 2021-2023 trucks before anything else.
Consumer Reports says the 2011 redesign turned the Durango into a quiet, roomy SUV close to the reborn Jeep Grand Cherokee, only a bit larger. That is no accident. The two share a platform and a long list of recalls, so our used Jeep Grand Cherokee buying guide is worth reading alongside this one. CR notes the eight-speed automatic arrived for 2014 and improved fuel economy and performance with both engines, and it treats 2014 as the start of the generation it rates today.
Years and engines
For 2021, CR says the Durango got a refreshed interior, a 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 screen on upper trims, and the SRT Hellcat. Blind spot and rear cross traffic warning became standard for 2022. For 2025 the lineup shrank to three trims: the GT with a 295-hp V6, the R/T with a 360-hp V8, and the 710-hp supercharged Hellcat. Car and Driver reports Dodge reversed a plan to make the V6 fleet-only in November 2025, so the 2026 GT keeps it, while CR lists 2027 powertrains as V8 only. C&D rates V8 Durangos to tow up to 8,700 pounds when properly equipped, against 6,200 for the V6 GT.
Look, if you tow a real trailer, the Hemi is the reason to buy this SUV over a crossover. If you do not, a V6 GT will cost you less at the pump. Dodge also built a Durango Pursuit for police use, and one had its own shifter recall, 23V-640, so read the history for fleet or government ownership.
2011-2014 recalls
The early trucks carry the heaviest list. The fuel pump relay inside the TIPM-7 power module could fail and stall the engine without warning. Chrysler recalled 2011 trucks under 14V-530 and 2012-2013 trucks under 15V-115, then came back with 19V-813, about 528,594 2011-2013 Durangos and Grand Cherokees, to replace the relay and its wiring again. So an early truck with the first relay fix on paper can still owe 19V-813. Brakes are next: 14V-154 covers about 646,498 2011-2014 trucks whose brake booster shell can corrode and let in water that may freeze and limit braking, and 17V-572 went back to check the shields dealers installed.
Charging problems got two recalls. 14V-634 covers about 435,081 cars and SUVs, including 2011-2014 Durangos with the 3.6 and a 160-amp alternator, where the alternator can suddenly fail. 17V-435 then covers about 442,214 vehicles with electro-hydraulic steering and certain alternators for the same failure. Chrysler's filings say a failed alternator can stall the truck without warning, and 17V-435 adds a possible short circuit and fire risk, so a seller who says "it just needs a battery" deserves a skeptical look.
2014-2023 recalls
18V-332 covers about 4,815,661 FCA vehicles, including 2014-2018 Durangos, where a short circuit could leave the cruise control on even after you hit the brake. Chrysler told owners to stop using cruise until a software flash was done. The 2018-2019 trucks have 24V-838, which replaced 22V-426 and covers about 206,502 Durangos and Grand Cherokees whose ABS module can light the brake lights, disable ABS and stability control, and let the truck shift out of Park without the brake pedal. Letters went out December 16, 2025, and trucks fixed under the old number need the new remedy too.
The 2021 refresh brought its own items. 26V-528 covers about 74,578 2021-2023 Durangos whose rear spoiler may not line up with the roof and can get damaged by the liftgate, and a damaged spoiler can come off on the road. It is the third spoiler recall on these years after 21V-842 and 23V-115, and as of the September 10, 2026 interim letters, a final remedy was still pending. 22V-154 covers 931 2021-2022 trucks whose steering rack bar may not be hardened properly, 22V-284 covers about 1,308 2021 V6 trucks with an EGR valve that can stick open and cut power, and 21V-280 covers about 2,721 2020-2021 trucks with a loose or missing curtain air bag fastener.
VIN, history, and price
Run the VIN with our Dodge recall check by VIN guide, then pull the history. A recall screen will not show police service, rental fleet use, or a towing life, and it will not catch a rolled odometer. Our odometer rollback detection checklist covers the mismatches to look for. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. If a seller texts you a PDF report with the VIN cropped off, assume it belongs to some other truck.
