A used Acura MDX is worth buying when the VIN is clear of the big V-6 and chassis recalls and you have picked the generation on purpose. For a 2014-2020 MDX, that means checking the connecting rod bearing recall, the 2026 rear subframe corrosion recall if the SUV lived in a salt state, and the tailgate light recall whose first fix did not hold. For a 2022-and-newer MDX, check the brake pedal and passenger seat sensor campaigns. Then drive it on a twisty road, because that is where the MDX earns its price.
The MDX sits in an odd spot. It is a three-row family SUV that reviewers keep praising for handling, and it shares a lot under the skin with the Honda Pilot, including some of the same recall paperwork. When we pulled the MDX recall list from NHTSA on October 13, 2026, the newest entries were Honda-wide campaigns that also list the Pilot, Passport, and Ridgeline. That is normal for Acura, and it makes the VIN lookup more useful than the model-year list.
Third generation vs fourth generation
Car and Driver's 2017 MDX review says the third generation arrived for 2014, a nine-speed automatic replaced the six-speed in 2016, and that gearbox can be slow to downshift. The available Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, SH-AWD, can send up to 70 percent of the torque to the appropriate rear wheel in corners, and a 321-hp Sport Hybrid with NSX-derived hardware joined for 2017. The 2022 review says Acura skipped the 2021 model year and redesigned the MDX for 2022, keeping a 290-hp 3.5-liter V-6 but pairing it with a 10-speed, adding the 355-hp turbocharged Type S, and dropping the hybrid. Both generations have a third row that Car and Driver calls kids-only. Decode the VIN with our Acura VIN decoder to confirm drivetrain and trim before you trust the ad.
On an SH-AWD car, ask for records of any rear differential fluid service the maintenance minder called for, and listen for clunks or groans from the rear on tight parking lot turns. We are not going to claim a failure rate we cannot source. We will say a missing service history on the most complicated part of the drivetrain is worth a price conversation.
2014-2020 recalls to clear first
23V-751 covers 2016-2020 MDX SUVs, along with TLX, Pilot, Ridgeline, and Odyssey models, whose connecting rod bearings may wear and seize. Dealers inspect and repair or replace the engine. MDX owner letters went out in stages from late 2024 into early 2025, later than for most of the other models. 26V-365 covers 2014-2020 MDXs sold in 22 salt-using states and D.C. whose rear subframe may corrode at the suspension mounts; interim letters went out July 27, 2026, and the final reinforcement remedy was expected in fall 2026. Consumer Reports said the cause is a paint defect on the subframe.
Then the tailgate. 25V-259 covers about 152,800 2014-2020 MDXs where moisture can get into the tailgate lid light assembly and wiring and knock out lid lights, license lights, and taillights. The filing says cars already repaired under 19V-256 need the new remedy. So check that every rear light works on your walkaround, and do not accept a 2019 repair order as proof. Smaller older campaigns include 19V-298 for timing belt teeth on 2018-2019 MDXs and 19V-060 for fuel pump particulates on 2016-2018 models.
2022 and newer recalls
25V-391 covers 2023-2025 MDX, 2021-2025 TLX, and 2023-2025 Pilot vehicles whose brake pedal pivot pin was not secured properly, so the pedal can shift out of position. On 2025 models, 25V-032 covers about 9,221 MDXs whose center touchscreen may go blank and take the rearview camera with it; dealers replace the display. The 2026 seat weight sensor recall, 26V-332, lists the 2017-2020 and 2022-2026 MDX, and the sensor may crack and short circuit, which can cause the air bags to deploy unintentionally in a crash. Our guide to checking recalls by VIN shows how to read each status.
How it compares, and CPO vs private
If the MDX's third row is too small, our used Honda Pilot buying guide covers the roomier cousin with overlapping recalls, and our used Toyota Highlander buying guide covers the other obvious rival. An Acura certified pre-owned MDX adds an inspection and extended coverage; get the coverage end date and mileage cap in writing and still ask for the open-campaign printout. In a private sale, put it on a lift, especially if it came from Ohio, Pennsylvania, or New York.
History report and price
CARFAX says its reports cover title brands, odometer readings, ownership, and reported accidents, and our guide on how to read a CARFAX report explains the service and damage lines. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. An MDX with a fresh undercoating job and no service records deserves a hard look underneath.
