A used Mercedes-Benz GLC is a comfortable, quiet compact SUV, and the smart buy is the one whose VIN is clear of the recalls tied to its generation. On a 2016-2022 GLC, check the power steering and headlight aim campaigns. On a 2023-2024 GLC, check the 2026 driver door lock recall that can keep Auto-Park from engaging, the fuse box recall that had to be redone on some cars, and the panoramic roof trim fix. Then decide whether a certified pre-owned warranty is worth the markup.
Most people shopping a GLC are not chasing lap times, and Car and Driver's own verdict on the 2020 model was quiet and refined but lacking driving verve. The trouble is that a 2018 and a 2024 GLC are different cars with different problems, and private-sale listings rarely say which recalls were done. When we pulled the GLC recall list from NHTSA on October 13, 2026, the newer cars had more recent, still-rolling campaigns, while the older ones had long-closed fixes that a careless owner may have skipped.
First generation vs second generation
The GLC's first U.S. model year was 2016, the earliest year in its NHTSA recall history. Car and Driver's 2020 review describes that year's refresh: a new turbocharged four with 14 more horsepower (255 hp), a nine-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive standard with 4Matic optional, the MBUX infotainment system, and a plug-in GLC350e with a bigger battery. The 2023 review calls the GLC all new, still at 255 hp but now with a 48-volt hybrid system and a vertical touchscreen, and notes the old-style GLC300 Coupe carried over for 2023. Car and Driver lists 54 miles of electric range for the current plug-in version. Decode the VIN with our Mercedes VIN decoder so you know which body and drivetrain you are pricing.
2016-2022 recalls to check
24V-070 covers about 15,502 2019-2022 GLC 300, 2020 GLC 350e, and 2020-2022 AMG GLC 43 SUVs whose headlights may be aimed too high and glare at oncoming traffic; dealers check and correct the aim. Power steering has two small campaigns: 19V-822 for a handful of 2019 GLC 300s, and 20V-651 for about 2,533 2020 GLC models whose steering control wiring may have been damaged in production, risking loss of assist or a short circuit. Early cars, the 2016-2018 GLC 300 and GLC 300 4Matic, are in 17V-627, where the driver air bag may deploy unexpectedly if the steering components are poorly grounded and the clockspring is broken. Late first-generation cars from 2021-2022 also fall in the 23V-445 fuel pump recall, where the pump may shut down and cut drive power.
One oddball is worth knowing. 23V-854 covers about 2,976 2014-2020 Mercedes models, including the GLC, whose front roof panel may not have been bonded correctly during a prior repair. If the history report shows roof or windshield work, ask about it.
2023-2024 recalls to check
26V-481 covers 310,667 Mercedes vehicles, including 2023-2024 GLCs, whose driver door lock micro-switch may corrode and fail to detect an open door, which can keep the electronic parking brake or Auto-Park from engaging and lead to a rollaway. The remedy is phased, with letters expected around September 18, 2026. 25V-379 covers about 92,851 2023-2025 GLCs with a panoramic sunroof whose C-pillar may not absorb enough impact if a rear passenger's head hits it; dealers modify the roof lining and pillar trim. 25V-533 covers 2023-2026 GLC and EQE models with a steering coupling bolt that may not have been tightened properly.
Fuse boxes need a second look on these years. 24V-115 replaced the main fuse boxes on 2023-2024 GLC 300s and other models because the 80-amp fuses may fail, and 25V-255 covers 443 cars that got the wrong fuse box during that first repair. Newer cars also have 26V-281, a 2024-2026 software fix for an infotainment unit that may reset and blank the instrument display. Run all of it through our steps for checking recalls by VIN.
CPO vs private sale
Mercedes-Benz USA's CPO page says certified cars get a 165-plus point inspection on gas models and come with a CARFAX report, and that dealers perform outstanding recall campaigns before the sale. Coverage is the remainder of the 4-year/50,000-mile new vehicle warranty, then a 12-month unlimited-mile CPO warranty, with one or two more years available to buy. That is a strong argument for CPO on a 2022-2024 car. On an older GLC well past its factory warranty the CPO math gets thinner, and in a private sale a Mercedes specialist's pre-purchase inspection is the cheaper way to get a second opinion. History report and price
CARFAX says its reports show title brands, odometer readings, ownership, and reported accidents, and our guide on how to read a CARFAX report covers those lines. As of mid October 2026, CARFAX through us costs about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. A "certified" sticker from a used-car lot that is not a Mercedes dealer is just a sticker.
