Yes, you can still check Saab recalls by VIN on NHTSA's site, and for most US Saabs General Motors still pays for the open safety campaigns even though Saab Automobile went bankrupt in December 2011. On a used 9-3, 9-5, 9-7X, 9-2X, or 9-4X in mid October 2026, clear the driver air bag inflator recall 16V-063 first, then the model-specific campaigns that sit under GM, Subaru, or Cadillac dealer systems.
Saab's Swedish parent was declared bankrupt after a last-ditch Chinese rescue failed, and The New York Times Wheels desk reported that GM said it would cover recalls on vehicles it sold through the 2009 model year. Later Takata-style work on Saabs landed at Cadillac dealers when NHTSA asked GM to help. That split is why a VIN check and a dealer call both matter: the federal file shows the campaign, and the dealer system shows whether the part was ever installed.
How to run a Saab VIN after the brand died
Copy the 17-digit VIN from the dash plate and the door jamb, match both to the title, then run it on NHTSA. Our walkthrough on checking recalls by VIN on NHTSA explains incomplete and remedy-not-available statuses. Decode the same VIN on NHTSA's vPIC if you need plant, restraint, and series detail. For GM-era cars, call a Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac service desk with the VIN. For the Subaru-built 9-2X, Subaru dealers own several campaigns even though GM still mails some Saab owners. Our Saab VIN decoder covers how the WMI and platform codes split across those parents.
9-3 and 9-5: driver air bag and seat belt
NHTSA recall 16V-063 covers about 113,716 vehicles, including 2006-2011 Saab 9-3 and 2006-2009 Saab 9-5 cars, where the driver's frontal inflator can rupture from excess pressure. GM replaces the inflator free of charge. The dealer bulletin NHTSA filed for that campaign told Cadillac dealers to do the Saab work after NHTSA asked GM to help. Look, if that line still shows open on a 9-3 convertible or Aero, we would not drive it daily until it is closed.
14V-318 then hits about 28,789 2004-2011 Saab 9-3 Convertibles whose driver's front seat belt retractor can break so the webbing will not retract. Dealers replace the retractor. Older 9-5 cars also carry 08V-160, about 57,389 2002-2008 9-5s that failed a head-restraint compliance test. Our Takata air bag recall guide explains why inflator campaigns show up years after a brand dies.
9-7X, 9-2X, and 9-4X: shared platforms
The 9-7X is a GMT360 truck under Saab badges, shared with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and Isuzu Ascender. 12V-406 covers about 278,174 vehicles in salt-belt states, including 2006-2007 9-7X trucks, for corrosion that can short the driver's door module. Related follow-ons include 13V-248 and 14V-404 for the same door-module water path. Headlamp driver module campaign 15V-519 also lists the 9-7X. A GM truck dealer usually has the parts history for these.
The 9-2X is a Subaru Impreza twin from 2005-2006. Subaru filed passenger inflator recalls that include it, among them 20V-001 and 20V-003, and the remedy text says Subaru notifies Subaru owners while GM notifies Saab owners. Front lower control arm corrosion campaign 11V-464 also lists 2005-2006 9-2X cars in rust-belt states. The short-lived 9-4X, built with the Cadillac SRX, shows up in 14V-571 (about 290,241 SRX and 9-4X vehicles) and later 21V-473 for a rear toe-link adjuster that can loosen. Ask the Cadillac desk to pull both.
What a clean recall screen will not show
A closed NHTSA list does not prove a clean title, honest mileage, or flood-free carpet. Saabs that still hold enthusiast money, especially a 9-3 Aero or a well-kept 9-5 wagon, attract curbstoners who skip the history. Read the report with our guide on how to read a CARFAX report, and compare owner count to what the seller claims. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian, and nobody hands out a full official report for free no matter what a sketchy PDF site promises. Car and Driver's Saab archive is useful background on which years shared which platforms before you bid.
