Yes, you can check Mercury recalls by VIN the same way you check any Ford: NHTSA's lookup covers every Mercury VIN, and Ford dealers still perform the free safety repairs even though Mercury production ended in late 2010. On a used Grand Marquis, Mariner, Milan, Mountaineer, Sable, or Montego in mid October 2026, start with the electric power steering, Takata-style air bag, and Panther-platform steering campaigns that still show open on older cars.
Ford announced in June 2010 that Mercury production would end in the fourth quarter of that year and that owners would keep parts, service, and warranty support at Ford and Lincoln stores. Ford's PR Newswire release said there were no stand-alone Mercury dealerships left in North America. Wikipedia's Mercury brand summary puts the last Grand Marquis off the line on January 4, 2011. So every Mercury on the road is at least 15 years old, and recall letters chase registration addresses that may be three owners behind.
Run the VIN, then call a Ford service desk
Match the dash and door-jamb VIN to the title, then run it on NHTSA. Our guide to checking recalls by VIN on NHTSA covers what each status means. Decode the same VIN on NHTSA vPIC for plant and restraint detail, and a Ford or Lincoln dealer can see completion records the seller never kept. Our Mercury VIN decoder helps sort Grand Marquis (Panther) from Mariner (Escape twin) and Milan (Fusion twin) before you call. The sibling walkthrough on Ford recall checks by VIN uses the same dealer path.
Mariner and Escape twins: steering and transmission
NHTSA recall 14V-284 covers about 740,878 2008-2011 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles whose steering torque sensor can fail so electric power assist cuts out while driving. Dealers update the power steering control module software or replace the sensor under Ford's remedy. That is the campaign we would clear first on any Mariner still in daily use. Hybrid Mariners from 2006-2008 also show up in 14V-526 for a hybrid propulsion issue shared with Escape Hybrid.
15V-606 is narrower but ugly when it hits: Ford recalled certain 2001-2008 Escape and Mariner trucks that had already received a remanufactured CD4E transmission, because a park pawl problem can let the vehicle roll when the shifter shows Park. Only a small set were tagged in the original filing, so the VIN check matters more than the model year. Honestly, if a seller shrugs off an open Mariner steering recall, walk.
Milan air bags and ABS, Grand Marquis steering
The Milan shares its bones with the Fusion, which means it inherited the long Takata-era air bag chain. 21V-158 alone covers about 2,602,668 vehicles, including 2006-2011 Mercury Milan cars, for a driver's frontal inflator that can explode from propellant degradation. Earlier passenger-side waves such as 16V-384 and the follow-on 18V-775 (replacement inflators that still needed replacing) also list Milan. ABS hydraulic unit campaign 19V-904 covers 2006-2010 Fusion, Milan, Zephyr, and MKZ cars whose ABS valves can stick after reacting with certain brake-fluid additives. Our Takata air bag recall guide explains why these campaigns stack for years.
Grand Marquis shoppers should pull 14V-704, about 36,888 2005-2011 Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, and Town Car vehicles with a lower intermediate steering shaft that can corrode and separate, and 13V-385, about 355,000 of the same Panther cars for a loss of power steering assist. Montego and Sable buyers usually share Five Hundred and Taurus campaigns; run the VIN anyway because filler-pipe and air bag lines still open on some 2007-2010 cars.
History report before you pay
A clear recall screen will not show a rebuilt title, flood smell, or a rolled odometer, and cheap Mariners and Grand Marquis sedans are common auction flips. Pull the history and read owner count against the seller's story with our guide on how to read a CARFAX report. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian, and we will not pretend a full official report is free.
