Does Seattle Credit Union Require a CARFAX for a Car Loan?

Seattle Credit Union does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a hard requirement on its public rates page. On Nov. 5, 2026 its rates page showed auto loan APRs as low as 5.74% for 36, 48, 60 and 72 month terms and 6.24% for 84 months, with a $150,000 maximum loan amount on those cells and payment examples per $1,000 borrowed. Footnotes said the "as low as" auto rate assumes a term of 72 months or less, an 80% LTV and a vehicle less than 10 years old with fewer than 125,000 miles at financing. Because those quotes assume the car matches the paperwork, a history check before you sign protects you more than it protects the credit union.

What Seattle CU's pages say

I read Seattle Credit Union's rates page on Nov. 5, 2026. It listed:

  • Auto loan APRs as low as 5.74% for 36 through 72 month terms, with estimated monthly payments per $1,000 from about $30.31 (36 months) down to $16.46 (72 months).
  • 84 month auto APR as low as 6.24% with about $14.49 per $1,000 borrowed.
  • Maximum loan amount $150,000 on the published auto cells.
  • Rate effective November 5th, 2026 language on the APR footnotes, with contact numbers 206-398-5500 or 800-334-2489 for details.
  • RV and boat loan ranges on the same page (for example 8.49% as low as on an 84-month RV/boat cell) with separate LTV and age add-ons.

I did not find language that said a CARFAX is mandatory to close every auto loan. Offers and underwriting rules can still change, so ask your loan officer what file they need for your VIN. This is Seattle Credit Union, not Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union, so confirm you are on seattlecu.com before you rely on these numbers.

Why you should still pull a report

Credit unions price loans on the assumption that mileage, title brand and accident history match the application. A rebuilt brand, odometer rollback or undeclared salvage event can change insurance, resale and whether the CU will advance the amount you expected. The public footnote already narrows the "as low as" auto rate to newer, lower-mile cars at 80% LTV. Run NHTSA recalls on the VIN, then buy a history report you control. Our NHTSA versus CARFAX and NMVTIS versus CARFAX guides explain what each source catches. For branded-title financing friction, see financing a rebuilt title car.

Questions to ask Seattle CU before you sign

  • Do you require a CARFAX, AutoCheck or NMVTIS printout for this VIN?
  • Will a salvage, rebuilt or lemon brand change the APR or max advance?
  • Does my vehicle meet the under-10-year and under-125,000-mile assumptions for the posted as-low-as rate?
  • Which add-ons are optional under CFPB rules for this loan?

How to use the figures without getting trapped

Seattle CU's public auto grid is flat at 5.74% across several shorter terms, then steps up at 84 months. Ask for the APR that matches your credit tier, LTV and term in writing before you shop cars. Bring your own history report so mileage and title brand match the application.

Honestly, we have seen buyers assume an "as low as" rate survives a 12-year-old car with 140,000 miles. The footnote already says otherwise. Look, pull the report first so odometer and brand surprises show up before the closing packet.

Title brands and Seattle Credit Union

Public pages did not spell out a salvage advance matrix. Ask the underwriter how they treat salvage, rebuilt, flood and lemon brands before you write a deposit. If the seller hands you a PDF that skips auction rows, buy your own report anyway. Confirm report contents and total at checkout, then keep the PDF with the loan packet.

What the report costs

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.

RV and boat footnotes on the same Seattle CU rates page add 0.50% for LTV over 80% and 2.00% for model years 10 years and older on those products. Auto buyers should still ask whether similar age or LTV adjustments apply off the published as-low-as auto cells when their car sits outside the footnote assumptions.

If you are refinancing, bring the current payoff letter and your own history report so mileage and brands are not a surprise mid-close. Confirm report contents and total at checkout when you buy that file.

Membership eligibility still gates every quote. Ask how you qualify before you spend a weekend shopping cars priced for a member APR you cannot access yet.
