A smart recall check by VIN takes a couple of minutes on NHTSA, and Mercedes-Benz dealers still do the repairs even though smart stopped selling cars here after the 2019 model year. What you find depends on the year. NHTSA lists seven campaigns across the US fortwo run, and the one that matters most on an older car is 18V273000, an engine-bay fire risk on 42,781 of the 2008 and 2009 models.
We went through NHTSA's recall data for every smart model year from 2008 through 2019 on October 15, 2026, and cross-checked it against the agency's downloadable recall file. The 2010 through 2013 cars and the 2018 electric have no safety recalls on record at all. That surprised us a little, and it is also a reason to be careful with third-party lookup sites, because NHTSA files the car under half a dozen names: FORTWO, FORTWO COUPE, FORTWO CABRIOLET, FORTWO CONVERTIBLE, and electric versions of each. A tool that guesses the wrong one can show you a clean screen by accident.
How to run the check
Use the VIN, not the model name. Copy it from the base of the windshield and the door jamb, compare it to the title, and enter it on NHTSA. Our walkthrough on checking recalls by VIN on NHTSA explains the status labels. If you want to confirm the year and whether the car is gas or electric before you trust the result, our smart VIN decoder walks through the WME prefix and the positions that separate the two. For the raw data, the NHTSA recalls API for the 2008 fortwo shows both early campaigns.
2008 to 2015: the first-generation car
The early fortwo, which NHTSA paperwork calls the 451, carries the most serious campaign. Under 18V273000, the rear insulation mat in the engine compartment can deform and loosen with age until it touches hot exhaust parts. Dealers replace it with an improved mat. NHTSA's closing summary for investigation EA17-003 is worth two minutes of your time: it found non-crash fires trending up after about four years of service and accelerating after seven, and it notes the better mat first went into US cars for 2010. So a 2008 or 2009 that has never had the mat swapped is now well past the age where the fires showed up. We would not park one in an attached garage until a dealer confirms it is done.
The other 2008 campaign is tiny. 08V390000 covers 43 cars from a paint batch that was reworked at the plant, where the repaint could delaminate around the bonded windshield and roof. Smart USA Distributor LLC filed that one; every campaign after it was filed by Mercedes-Benz USA. Then 15V192000 covers 5,058 2014 and 2015 coupes and convertibles plus 2014 electric versions, for steering gear mounting bolts that can break. The 2010 to 2013 cars show nothing, which is good news, but it also means you have nothing on the federal side to tell you how the car has been looked after.
2016 to 2019: the redesigned car
The 2016-on car picked up three campaigns in its first two years. 17V179000 covers 2,213 2016 coupes whose horizontal headlight adjuster was not sealed, so the beams could be knocked out of aim and glare at oncoming drivers. 17V448000 covers 5,061 2016 fortwos with a parking brake cable lock nut that can loosen until the car will not hold on a hill. 17V447000 is 110 2017 fortwo and Cabriolet cars with a left front steering knuckle from a bad casting batch. Smart dropped the gas fortwo here in 2017, as Car and Driver reported when smart pulled out, so the last two years are electric only. Of those, NHTSA lists exactly one recall, 20V107000, and it covers one single 2019 Electric Drive car with a high-voltage battery weld that could detach. Odds are it is not the one you are looking at, but the VIN check costs nothing.
Who fixes a smart now
Mercedes-Benz USA still supports the brand. The smart USA page on mbusa.com says the cars are no longer sold here and points owners to dealers for service, parts, and recalls, and the smart service locations list covers 26 states this month. That leaves a lot of the map empty: Georgia, Michigan, and Massachusetts are not on it, and California shows three stores, in Oxnard, Sacramento, and San Jose. Car and Driver counted 82 dealers authorized to service smarts back in 2019, so the network has shrunk, and you should call before you assume a Mercedes store near you will take the car. Since Mercedes-Benz USA files these campaigns alongside its own models, our Mercedes-Benz recall check by VIN guide is a useful companion.
Before you buy one
A fortwo is cheap enough that people skip the paperwork. Do not be one of them. Pull a history report for the title, accidents, and owner count. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, or about $6.75 for a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle, compared to roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Confirm the price at checkout. We are a licensed reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. Car and Driver put the 2019 electric coupe at 58 miles of EPA range when new, so a weak pack can make the car close to useless, so get a battery reading before you hand over cash.
