To check VinFast recalls by VIN, run the 17-character VIN on NHTSA's lookup, then call a VinFast dealer to confirm the work was done. As of October 15, 2026, every US VinFast recall NHTSA lists is on the VF 8: four campaigns covering 2022 through 2025 models, two of them air bag fixes. The VF 9 has no NHTSA recall on file yet, which is good news with an asterisk.
We pulled NHTSA's recall data model year by model year this morning and found one small trap worth knowing about. The agency files VinFast's SUV under both "VF8" and "VF 8," and the 2025 ADAS campaign only shows up under the spaced spelling. A make-model-year search that guesses the wrong spelling misses campaigns. A VIN search does not have that problem, so start there.
Running the VIN
Get the VIN from the windshield plate and the driver door jamb, and make sure both match the title and the registration. Our guide to checking recalls by VIN on NHTSA covers how to read "incomplete" versus "remedy not yet available." US-market VF 8 VINs in the recall paperwork begin with RLLV, so if the VIN on the car starts some other way, ask where it was first sold. For a cross-check without the VIN, NHTSA's recalls API for the 2024 VF 8 returns the ADAS campaign below; swap in "VF8" without the space to see the other three.
The four VF 8 campaigns, oldest first
23V355000 was the first. NHTSA lists 999 2023 VF 8s whose multifunction head unit display could go blank from a software error, taking the speedometer and warning lights with it, which fails the federal controls and displays standard. VinFast updated the software, and its internal number is VPAC-74.
24V369000 is smaller but uglier. It covers 225 VF 8s from the 2022 through 2024 model years that may have had inactive ignitors installed in the air bags, meaning a bag might not deploy at all. VinFast replaces the air bags, campaign VPAC-291, with owner letters mailed June 21, 2024. Honestly, this is the one we would refuse to skip. A car with a dead air bag drives exactly like a car with a working one, and you will not find out from a test drive.
24V933000 is the big one by count, 4,888 vehicles from 2023 through 2025. According to VinFast's Part 573 report for 24V-933, NHTSA ran a side-impact compliance test on a 2024 VF 8 on June 14, 2024 and saw the center air bag in the driver's seat hit the dummy's arm. VinFast redesigned that bag with a different cushion shape, fold, and deployment angle, and dealers swap it free. The report lists production from October 12, 2022 to October 6, 2024, when the new bag went into the line. Canada ran the same fix as Transport Canada recall 2025006, which matters if the VF 8 you are looking at crossed the border.
25V559000 is the newest, 6,314 VF 8s from 2023 through 2025. The driver assistance system can activate during wide turns and move the steering wheel in ways that are hard to override. VinFast's remedy is an ADAS software update, with owner letters mailed October 27, 2025. NHTSA's record does not flag it as over-the-air, so plan on a service visit unless the dealer tells you otherwise.
What "no recalls" on a VF 9 means
We checked every VF 9 spelling for 2023 through 2026 and got nothing back from NHTSA. That means no safety recall has been filed for it in the US. It does not mean the VF 9 has no service campaigns, software bulletins, or complaints, and it is a much lower-volume vehicle, so problems take longer to pile up into a filing. Run the VIN again on the day you buy. Recalls get added, and an empty result from last month is stale.
The dealer and service reality
This is where VinFast ownership gets harder than the recall list suggests. VinFast started out selling direct and switched to franchised dealers. Its own June 2025 announcement of its first California dealer said it had more than 30 authorized dealerships in 15 states and was moving to a franchise model in all 50. That is a thin network for a car sold nationally. Before you buy, open the VinFast dealer locator and find the closest service point. The VinFast service page lists an authorized service network, certified collision centers, and a support line at 1-833-503-0600. If the nearest dealer is three hours away, an air bag recall becomes a tow bill or a day off work, and we would price that into the offer.
Before money changes hands
Recalls are one screen. Pull the history too, because a VF 8 that came off a lease, a rental fleet, or a salvage auction can still have a spotless NHTSA result.
