Travis Credit Union does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a requirement on its public auto loan rates page. As of the Oct. 6, 2026 effective date on that page, new auto APRs started at 5.24% and used auto APRs started at 5.49%, with ranges that climb by term and credit. Because those quotes assume the car matches the paperwork, a history check before you sign protects you more than it protects the credit union.
What Travis's page says
I read Travis Credit Union's auto loan rates page on Nov. 5, 2026. It listed:
- New Auto Loans (2025 and newer): APR ranges starting at 5.24% and rising by term, with an effective date of 10/06/2026.
- Used Auto Loans (2024 and older): APR ranges starting at 5.49% and rising by term, same effective date.
- Up to 125% financing that can include tax, license, registration and warranty, depending on qualifications.
- A 0.50% APR discount for members of more than six months on new and used auto rates; members of six months or fewer do not get that reduction.
- Final rate based on loan-to-value, term and creditworthiness; rates subject to change daily without notice.
The page also listed separate motorcycle and RV/boat products with different APR bands. Those are not the auto product.
Does Travis require a CARFAX?
Nothing on the auto loan rates page I read required a CARFAX, AutoCheck or other vehicle history report as a condition of the loan. Underwriters can still ask for documents that marketing pages omit. Ask your loan officer what they need for a used car before you write a deposit check.
Why you still want a history report
A 125% LTV on a flooded or branded car is how buyers get upside-down fast. Pull a report for accidents, title brands, odometer gaps and prior owners. Our how to read a CARFAX guide and NMVTIS versus CARFAX comparison help. Read used car loan-to-value explained before you stretch LTV, and credit union branded title checklist if a brand appears.
Dealer car or private sale
Ask whether Travis will fund a private-party purchase, how it pays the seller and which documents it needs. Private sales are where thin titles show up. Dealer deals still need a VIN check you control.
How to check the car yourself before you sign
- Match the VIN on the dash, door jamb and title.
- Run NHTSA recalls and a vehicle history report on that VIN.
- Check NMVTIS for brands.
- Use a pre-purchase inspection on older cars; see pre-purchase inspection cost.
Questions to ask Travis
- Do you require a vehicle history report for used cars?
- What APR applies after term, LTV and the member-longevity discount?
- Will you allow up to 125% LTV on this car?
- Will you fund a private-party purchase?
Rate math that bites buyers
Travis posts APR ranges, not a single teaser. A 5.24% starting point on a new car can climb when LTV, term and credit move. The 0.50% member-longevity discount only applies when you have been a member more than six months. Ask for a written quote on the VIN before you shop.
Member discount and LTV stretch
Travis advertises up to 125% financing on autos, which can fold in tax, license, registration and warranty when you qualify. That stretch only helps when the car is solid. On a car with hidden flood or frame work, a high LTV locks in a loss the moment you drive off.
The 0.50% discount for members of more than six months is real on the page I read, but only if you already meet that membership age. New members should ask for the undiscounted APR in writing so the payment sketch matches the closing disclosure.
Confirm the Oct. 6, 2026 effective date still matches the sheet your loan officer uses. Travis notes that rates can change daily, so a screenshot from last week is not a lock. Get the APR range in writing for the VIN and term you want.
Also ask whether Travis wants an inspection on private-party cars and who pays for it. A cheap inspection beats a surprise after the lien is filed.
What the report costs
As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
