Used Alfa Romeo Stelvio Buying Guide (2018 and Later)

If you want a used Alfa Romeo Stelvio, aim for a 2020-2023 car with the 280-hp turbo four and a dealer printout showing every recall closed; skip a 2018-2019 unless the seller can prove the fuel pump campaign was actually done. That fuel pump recall, 25V586, is the big one: when I pulled the NHTSA record this morning, October 17, 2026, it still described interim owner letters and a final fix that was "anticipated July 2026." So the remedy may have arrived, or it may still be stuck in parts limbo. Make the dealer show you which it is for your VIN.

The Stelvio is the crossover version of the Giulia sedan, and it shares the Giulia's chassis, engine and reputation. Our used Alfa Romeo Giulia buying guide covers the sedan; the short version of the contrast is that the Stelvio gives up some steering sharpness and a lot of curb weight for a hatch and standard all-wheel drive on most trims. It is not roomy, and it is not reliable by default, but people who like driving buy it anyway.

Which Stelvio years and trims exist

The Stelvio arrived in the U.S. for 2018. Car and Driver's 2018 review gave it an 8 out of 10, praised the handling and the 280-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter with its eight-speed automatic, and then listed "unproven powertrain" and interior quality "substandard for the luxury class" as lows. Their test car's power seat trembled on its tracks. Remember that when a 2018 shows up priced well under a comparable X3.

The 2024 model got the only real refresh. Per C/D's 2024 page, it added a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, LED matrix headlights, revised taillights and a new top Competizione trim with the Quadrifoglio's adaptive suspension. The base Sprint was rear-drive that year; everything else had AWD. For 2026, C/D's current Stelvio page says every car is the 280-hp four with standard AWD and that a full redesign is expected as a 2027 model. Warranty is four years or 50,000 miles, so a 2023 or newer car may still have some factory coverage left; check the in-service date on the build sheet, not the model year.

The Quadrifoglio is a different purchase

The Stelvio Quadrifoglio uses a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 with 505 hp and 443 lb-ft. C/D's Quadrifoglio review recorded 3.3 seconds to 60 mph, rated it a 9, and still listed reliability concerns among the lows, partly from its own long-term Giulia QF. The QF left North America after the 2024 model year, with production reported to end in June 2024, so the used pool will only shrink. If you are shopping one, confirm the engine on NHTSA's free vPIC decoder and with our Alfa Romeo VIN decoder guide; a cloverleaf badge on a four-cylinder car is not hard to buy online.

Honestly, a QF with thin records is the riskiest version of an already risky car. Ceramic brakes and a twin-turbo V6 make every deferred item expensive. Compare the asking price against a Macan in our used Porsche Macan buying guide before you fall for the exhaust note.

Stelvio recalls I checked on October 17, 2026

I ran the NHTSA recalls API for every Stelvio model year from 2018 through 2026. The early cars have the longest list. These are the campaigns I would ask about first:

  • 25V586, 2018-2019: the fuel pump may fail, causing loss of drive power. The NHTSA record covers 53,849 Giulias and Stelvios. Interim letters went out October 7, 2025, and the fix is a new fuel delivery module once parts exist.
  • 24V510, 2018-2025: a seat belt buckle switch sensor may be connected improperly, so a front air bag may not deploy as intended. Dealers repair the connection.
  • 25V667, 2020-2025: a defect in the rearview camera circuit board or software can keep the image from displaying properly. Letters went out November 25, 2025; dealers may replace the radio.
  • 24V943, 2019-2020: the fastener joining the brake pedal and booster may be assembled wrong. Dealers inspect and repair.
  • 2018 build issues: 18V205 and 18V203 for water getting into the body control module and liftgate wiring, 17V823 for contaminated brake fluid, and 18V635 for the QF's coolant hose.

Our Alfa Romeo recall check by VIN walkthrough shows how to confirm what is still open on one specific car.

What to check on the test drive

Start cold if you can. Watch for warning lights that come and go, since several early recalls involved water in electrical connectors, and look at the liftgate switch and wiring for corrosion. Cycle the rearview camera a few times. Hard, long cranking or stumbling on the 2018-2019 cars points straight at the fuel pump campaign. A car that rattles now will not get quieter. Cargo space is a small 19 cubic feet per C/D, so bring the stroller along.

If you end up cross-shopping, the more practical, more boring choice is in our used BMW X3 buying guide. C/D's own test had the Stelvio quicker to 60 than a four-cylinder X3, but C/D says the X3 has about 10 more cubic feet behind the rear seats and uses less fuel.

History report and what it costs

Run the VIN through NMVTIS for title brands, then read a full history for accidents, owner count, odometer readings and service visits. A Stelvio that bounced between three owners in two years is telling you something, and a seller's emailed PDF is not a report you can trust; pull your own. CarVins is a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller with no affiliation to CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Alfa Romeo. In mid October 2026 our guest price sat near $5.50 a report, members paid around $4.50, and the two-report bundle ran about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 buying straight from the brands. Prices move, so the checkout page is the number that counts.
