Aston Martin DB5 Buying Guide: Rust, Heat and Proof

Buy an Aston Martin DB5 on a sound steel structure, a cool-running engine and papers that back every claim first. Rust starts inside the alloy body, and a car upgraded to Vantage spec later is not a factory Vantage.

For this November 5, 2026 guide I read Goodwood Insurance: Aston Martin DB5 buyer's guide and Car Collector International: Aston Martin DB5 guide. The mechanical cautions below come from those pages; the order of checks and the questions for the seller are my own practical recommendations. Any price figures in those sources are market snapshots, not a valuation of the car in front of you. So, compare it with recent sales of the same specification and condition. I also kept the advice to things you can see, hear or ask for on a viewing day.

Look for rust from the inside out

Goodwood says the aluminium body sits over a steel structure, so rust starts inside and works out. Bubbling paint can mean electrolytic corrosion. It lists the footwells, sills, jacking points, suspension mounts and spare wheel well. A lift is a must.

Watch how fast it warms up

Goodwood warns that coolant passages at the back of the block can clog, and that a car which warms up suspiciously fast may not be circulating coolant properly. Car Collector International suggests a cooling-system pressure test and a compression test.

Check oil changes and the chain

Goodwood says the engine is sturdy but wants frequent oil changes, with the timing chain replaced every 60,000 miles. Ask for the invoices. Car Collector International also lists low oil pressure when hot. Note the gauge on your drive.

Drive the ZF gearbox hot and cold

Car Collector International lists a crunch into second when cold and baulking downshifts as signs of synchro wear. Goodwood says clonks or slipping out of gear are concerns. Try all five gears at both temperatures.

Prove the Vantage and the numbers

Goodwood says Vantage cars used Webers instead of SUs, and warns about standard cars upgraded later. Car Collector International suggests an Aston Martin Heritage Trust check on the engine number. Do this before any deposit.

Ask who did the restoration

Goodwood expects most cars to have had one or more full restorations, ideally with photos and a respected specialist. Sloppy steering can be bushes or a corroded mount. Our strut-mount check guide covers mount checks you can ask about.

Know what the body style is worth

Goodwood says about 1,059 DB5s were built, around 60 in period Vantage spec and 123 as convertibles, plus a handful of Radford shooting brakes. Rarer styles carry more money, so the proof needs to be stronger too. Ask for factory build records before you accept a claim that changes the price.

Prove the identity before a deposit

Match the chassis number on the DB5 to the title, any import papers and the plate on the car before you order a history report. Our VIN verification guide walks through that match, and imported-car report coverage sets expectations for cars that spent years overseas. Older chassis numbers may sit outside modern report databases, so confirm coverage before paying. NMVTIS covers U.S. title history only; it cannot replace foreign records or a physical inspection.

Get the repair scope in writing first

If the structure or the cooling looks wrong, get an Aston specialist's written estimate before you agree a price. Look, a seller PDF or a folder of photos is a starting document, not independent proof of condition. Ask the inspector for written findings with local estimates, split into safety work and cosmetic wishes. The NYC consumer-agency used-car guidance tells buyers to have an independent mechanic check the car, and our pre-purchase inspection checklist helps you set the scope. Keep a dated note of the drive, the temperatures and any noises, because a seller who disputes your findings later will ask what you saw and when.

Guest reports have been about $5.50, member reports about $4.50 and a two-report bundle about $6.75; confirm the price at checkout because it can change. A report can miss unreported work, so keep the inspection appointment even when the history looks quiet.
