A used BMW Z4 is a good buy when you match the recall list to the exact generation and confirm each fix by VIN. The 2003-2008 cars, the 2009-2016 hardtop cars and the 2019-and-later roadsters each have their own set of campaigns, and several of the older ones involve fire or stalling risks. Check the VIN first, then the roof, then the title.
Which Z4 are you looking at?
- E85/E86 (2003-2008): soft-top roadster, plus a coupe for 2006-2008.
- E89 (2009-2016): folding hardtop, sDrive30i, sDrive35i, 35is and later the four-cylinder sDrive28i.
- G29 (2019 on): soft top again, sDrive30i and M40i. There was no U.S. Z4 for 2017-2018.
Decode the VIN before you rely on the trim in the ad. Our BMW VIN decoder guide shows what each digit tells you.

Mechanical checks
Cycle the roof several times. On E89 cars the hardtop is hydraulic and slow repairs are expensive. On soft tops, look for torn fabric and wet carpet. Check for oil leaks at the valve cover and oil filter housing on six-cylinder cars, and listen for a rough start that could point to a VANOS or fuel issue.
A pre-purchase inspection from a BMW shop is money well spent. Our inspection cost guide covers what to expect.
Reading the history report
Convertibles get flooded more than people think. Look for a flood or salvage brand, water damage notes, and a car that moved from a hurricane state with a fresh title. Watch for repeated airbag or roof repairs, and odometer readings that do not add up. If the report you were handed looks too clean, check our guide to a fake CARFAX report.
When to walk away
- Open fire-risk recalls (the PCV heater items) the seller will not let a dealer fix first.
- A roof that will not complete a cycle.
- Any branded title on a car priced like a clean one.
Questions to ask the seller
- Has a BMW dealer done the open recalls, and can I see the invoice?
- Has the roof ever been repaired or replaced?
- When was the last oil service, and what oil?
How to price a used Z4
Price follows generation, engine and roof condition more than mileage alone. A six-cylinder E85 with a manual and records will hold value better than a four-cylinder E89 with gaps in its service history. Compare cars with the same engine, then knock off the cost of anything the inspection finds, including open recalls a dealer still has to do.
Cars from the snow belt need an underbody look for corrosion around the subframe and brake lines. Cars from the coast need a check for salt and water in the trunk well, where the battery and some modules sit on several BMW roadsters.
On the day you buy
Match the VIN on the windshield, the door jamb and the title. Confirm the name on the title matches the seller ID. If a bank is listed as lienholder, get the payoff and release handled before you hand over money. Drive the car with the roof down and up, and listen for wind noise or rattles that point to bad seals.
What the report costs
As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
