Used Cadillac CTS Buying Guide: Best Years, Timing Chains and Open Recalls

Three generations, one tricky name. Which CTS years and engines to buy, the 2008-2009 timing chain history, the open 2026 air bag recall and the crash scores to know.

Used Cadillac CTS Buying Guide: Best Years, Timing Chains and Open Recalls

The used Cadillac CTS I'd shop for in mid October 2026 is a 2017-2019 sedan with the 3.6-liter V-6 or the 2.0 turbo, with a dealer printout showing the power steering recall was done. Be careful with 2015-2016 cars. A recall opened in May 2026 says the driver air bag inflator can rupture, and the record I pulled on October 16 still said the fix wasn't available. Older CTSs are cheap for a reason: the 2008-2009 V-6s are known for timing chain wear, and the warranty extension for it ran out years ago.

Consumer Reports splits the CTS into three generations: 2003-2007, 2008-2013 and 2014-2019, and says 2019 was the last year. The CT5 replaced it. Our used Cadillac CT5 guide covers that car if your budget stretches to a 2020 or newer.

Which generation fits your budget

The first generation is the cheap way in, and also the oldest. CR says the base 3.2-liter V-6 was replaced by a 2.8 for 2005, a 3.6 was optional, and the first CTS-V used a 5.7-liter V-8 with a six-speed manual.

The second generation is the one most people find. MotorTrend's 2013 review lists sedan, coupe and wagon bodies, rear- or all-wheel drive, a 270-hp 3.0 V-6, a 318-hp 3.6, and the 556-hp supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 in the CTS-V. It also called the interior quality subpar for the class. The Cadillac legacy page says the CTS Coupe and Sport Wagon ended in 2014 and the CTS-V Coupe in 2015. That's why a "2014 CTS" might be either generation, depending on the body style.

The third generation started with the 2014 sedan. MotorTrend says it offered a 272-hp 2.0 turbo, a 321-hp 3.6 and a 420-hp twin-turbo V-6 in the Vsport. Car and Driver says that by 2019, AWD came only with the 2.0T and 3.6, while the V-Sport and the 640-hp CTS-V were rear-drive only. It praised the handling and listed a cramped back seat, middling refinement and inconsistent build quality as the downsides. The timing chain issue on older V-6s

GM's special coverage bulletin 11340C says 2007-2009 CTS cars with the 2.8 or 3.6 could wear their timing chains prematurely on the original oil change intervals, which turns on the check engine light. GM covered it for 10 years or 120,000 miles from the in-service date, so every one of those cars is past that now. A later GM bulletin listed timing chain kits for 3.6 CTS models through 2012, tied to codes P0008 and P0009. The 2009 NHTSA complaint file mentions a timing chain 42 times, and some owners quote bills of about $1,600 to $4,400. If the seller can't show oil changes and has no record of chain work, price in the repair or move on.

Recalls to clear by VIN

I pulled every year from the NHTSA recalls API on Friday afternoon, October 16, including the 2015 CTS query. The ones I'd check first:

  • 26V329, 2015-2016: the driver air bag inflator may rupture and throw metal fragments. Interim letters went out June 19, 2026, and the remedy wasn't available yet.
  • 19V086 and 25V175, 2016-2018: electric power steering assist can fail. Dealers replace the steering gear, and the 2025 campaign's letters went out April 15, 2025.
  • 14V394, 2003-2014: a heavy key ring can bump the ignition out of Run. Keep only the key on the ring until it's fixed.
  • 18V595, 2014-2016: heated seat mats can get damaged and overheat.
  • 11V089, 2009-2010: rear toe link nuts can loosen. A clank from the rear end is the warning sign.
  • 10V105, 2003-2007 in salt states: front brake hose fittings can corrode.

Our Cadillac recall check by VIN post walks through checking the exact car.

Crash scores

IIHS rated the 2016-2019 CTS Marginal in the driver-side small overlap test, even after GM changed the front steering links for 2016. Every other crash test was Good. The headlights were Poor and the LATCH anchors Marginal. That's weak for a luxury sedan, and I'd want you to know it before you get attached to the styling.

Alternatives

If the timing chain and air bag history worry you, look at our used Lexus IS guide if a smaller sedan works for you. For a German rival, see the BMW 3 Series guide or the 5 Series guide. The CTS usually drives better than it's built.

Price and the history report

CR's retail ranges run from about $5,600-$25,850 for a 2014 to $11,800-$58,075 for a 2019, and the top of each range is the CTS-V. A former luxury car at a bargain price may have a messy past, so check brands free on NMVTIS and run a report on the VIN yourself. We're a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Right now we charge about $5.50 for a guest report, $4.50 for members, or roughly $6.75 for the pair. Buying direct runs around $39.99 to $44.99. The amount shown at checkout is what you'll pay.
