Used Lexus IS Buying Guide: IS 250 vs IS 350, Recalls

For a used Lexus IS in mid October 2026, prefer a well-documented IS 350 over a bargain IS 250 if you want fewer carbon headaches, clear Takata and wiper recalls by VIN on second-gen cars, and never skip title and crash history just because the badge says Lexus. These are rear-drive (or AWD) sports sedans that age well when maintained, and age badly when someone ignored intake cleaning, airbag campaigns, or a rebuilt title.

We still see IS listings priced like appliances with "garage kept" as the only maintenance story. Honestly, that is not enough. Cold idle quality, service stamps for carbon work on IS 250 cars, and a real recall printout matter more than polished wheels.

If you want the softer Lexus sedan instead, our used Lexus ES buying guide covers the front-drive comfort car. For a European alternative in the same size class, see the used BMW 3 Series buying guide.

IS 250, IS 350, and later numbers

Second-generation U.S. IS cars (roughly 2006-2013) were sold mainly as IS 250 and IS 350, with an IS F halo and later IS C convertibles. Third-generation cars (2014-on) reshaped the sheet metal and eventually offered IS 300, IS 350, and high-output IS 500 variants depending on year. Car and Driver's Lexus IS pages and MotorTrend's IS coverage are solid for year and powertrain context. EPA's 2010 Lexus IS fuel-economy listings help settle RWD versus AWD arguments on older cars. IIHS posts crash ratings by year; the 2017 IS ratings page is one concrete third-gen example.

AutoGuide's used IS review of the 2006-2013 generation still tracks with what we hear from shops: the IS 350 is the stronger used pick, while the IS 250's direct-injection 2.5-liter V6 is the one known for intake-valve carbon buildup that can cause rough idle and misfires. AutoGuide notes Lexus ran a customer service program for carbon cleaning on some cars and that hard driving can help knock deposits loose, but that is not a substitute for records. Ask for invoices if the seller claims the work was done. The IS 350's dual injection setup washes the valves better, which is why shops push buyers that way when budgets allow.

Recalls that still matter

Takata passenger airbag inflators remain a hard stop on older IS cars. NHTSA acknowledgment 19V-741 covers Lexus IS models in the Takata passenger-inflator population, including 2006-2012 IS 250/350 ranges listed in the campaign documents. A dealer must replace the inflator or assembly at no charge when the VIN is open. Do not drive a car with an open Takata campaign as a daily and "get to it later."

Earlier, Toyota recalled 2006 through early 2012 IS 250 and IS 350 models (plus related IS C and IS F years) because front wiper arm nuts could loosen under heavy snow or ice loads. Campaign 13V-030 covers that repair. It is old, but unfinished old recalls still show up on dealer screens.

Title, crash, and price reality

Luxury badges attract rebuilt titles and staged photos. A recall clear will not show a flood brand, a rolled odometer, or a side-swipe that never made an insurer report. CARFAX vehicle history reports pull title, ownership, odometer, and many accident records when they exist. As of mid October 2026, one report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller and are not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian.

Budget for suspension bushings, tires, and brakes on sport packages. A cheap IS 250 with a rough idle and no carbon paperwork is usually more expensive than the IS 350 next to it once you add shop time.
