Used Cadillac Escalade Buying Guide: Years, L87, ESV

Used Cadillac Escalade Buying Guide: Years, L87, ESV

A used Cadillac Escalade is the luxury twin of Tahoe and Yukon, so the year split still matters: 2015-2020 K2XX trucks versus the 2021-and-newer T1XX redesign with Super Cruise and a roomier third row. Most shoppers want the 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8, which means you clear L87 engine recall 25V-274 by VIN before you talk about Black and Sport trims. Short-wheelbase Escalade versus long ESV is a cargo decision, not a status one.

We pulled Escalade filings and review specs in mid October 2026. Car and Driver lists a standard 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 with a 10-speed automatic, an optional 682-hp supercharged V-8 on the V model, Super Cruise as available hands-free driving, and up to about 8,100 pounds of towing when properly equipped. The ESV stretches third-row legroom and cargo. Decode the VIN with our Cadillac VIN decoder, then compare the Chevy and GMC twins in our used Chevy Tahoe buying guide and used GMC Yukon buying guide without cloning their opens.

2015-2020 versus 2021 and newer

The 2021 redesign is the nicer daily driver. Independent rear suspension, a wider cabin and a much better third row separate it from the older body-on-frame Escalade that still tows but rides like a prior-decade truck. Consumer Reports covers the model line if you want reliability context after you clear safety campaigns. So, our take: a 2021-2024 Escalade or Escalade ESV with documented L87 work is the sweet spot for most families, while a clean 2018-2020 truck can still make sense if the price reflects the older interior and you accept that Super Cruise will not be part of the pitch.

The 6.2-liter L87 recall

NHTSA recall 25V-274 covers certain 2021-2024 Escalade and Escalade ESV models with the 6.2-liter L87 gas V-8 (plus related Chevy and GMC trucks and SUVs). Connecting rod or crankshaft manufacturing defects can lead to engine damage and loss of propulsion. One filing lists roughly 79,000-plus Escalades and 46,000-plus Escalade ESVs in the affected window. Dealers inspect and repair or replace the engine as needed; trucks that pass still get higher-viscosity oil, a new oil fill cap, a new filter and an owner's manual update. Letters went out in mid 2025 under GM number N252494000. Ask which outcome your VIN got and get the repair order with the VIN on it. An undocumented knock on an SUV this expensive is a gamble we would walk away from.

The Escalade-V with the 682-hp supercharged 6.2 is a different animal. It is faster and thirstier, and it still sits inside the same GM full-size family for many chassis campaigns even when the engine story differs. If the ad says V and the VIN engine field does not match, stop. We have seen badge swaps and grille swaps fool buyers who never decoded the truck.

ESV length, Super Cruise and fleet history

Short Escalade versus ESV is mostly about cargo and garage length. Super Cruise needs map updates and a clear windshield camera path; a seller who never subscribed or never took the truck in for map module updates can leave you with a grayed-out feature. Escalades also show up as black-car and corporate fleet units. A recall lookup will not tell you that. Read the history with our guide on how to read a CARFAX report, and treat a suspiciously new carpet smell near the Gulf Coast as a flood check before you fall for the chrome wheels.

Title, odometer and price

CARFAX says its reports pull title brands, odometer readings, ownership and reported accidents. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. Honestly, a seller PDF with no VIN printed on it is worth nothing on a six-figure used luxury SUV. Ask for a lift inspection that covers oil condition, air suspension leaks if equipped, and the front camera and radar mounts that Super Cruise depends on. A truck that spent years as a black-car can still be fine, but idle hours and curb rash tell a different ownership story than a suburban family Escalade with service stamps every 5,000 miles.
