Used GMC Yukon Buying Guide: XL, 6.2L Recalls, CPO

A used GMC Yukon or Yukon XL works as a three-row family hauler if you match length and engine to the job and clear the VIN on the shared GM full-size campaigns. On 2021-2024 trucks with the 6.2-liter V-8, that means the connecting rod and crankshaft recall. On 2025-2026 trucks with 24-inch wheels, it means the front hub bolt campaign. Get those answered before you talk Denali trim.

Yukon shares its bones with Tahoe, Suburban, and Escalade, so many recall PDFs list all four. In mid October 2026 that is useful: the same GM campaign number closes on a Yukon as on a Cadillac. We pulled Yukon filings on October 13, 2026, and decoded them against our GMC VIN decoder so engine and wheel packages line up with the campaigns.

Yukon versus Yukon XL, and the engines

Per Car and Driver's Yukon overview, current trucks offer a 355-hp 5.3-liter V-8, a 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8, and a 305-hp 3.0-liter diesel inline-six, all with a 10-speed automatic. The XL stretches cargo space well past the short-wheelbase Yukon. Ride and third-row access improved on the 2021 redesign versus the prior generation. If you want the Chevy badge and often a lower sticker, our used Chevy Tahoe buying guide covers the twin; for a crew-cab truck alternative see our used GMC Sierra buying guide.

6.2-liter engine recall

25V-274 covers about 597,571 2021-2024 Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles (plus Escalade, Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado, and Sierra) with a 6.2-liter gas V-8. Connecting rod or crankshaft defects can destroy the engine. Dealers inspect and repair or replace as needed; trucks that pass still get higher-viscosity oil, a new oil fill cap, a new filter, and a manual update. Letters went out June 18, 2025. GM number N252494000. We've seen Denali ads that never mention the campaign even when the VIN is open.

Hub bolts, transfer case and TCM lockup

26V-304 covers about 2,457 2025-2026 Yukon and Yukon XL models with 24-inch wheels. Incorrect front hub bolts may loosen or deform. Dealers replace both front hub bolts. 26V-289 is only about 66 vehicles, but GM says do not drive until the transfer case is inspected or replaced because a missing component can lock wheels without warning. On 2022 Yukons with 10-speed ETRS, 26V-085 covers about 43,743 trucks whose transmission control valve may lock the rear wheels; dealers install TCM software. Diesel Yukons from 2021 also sit inside 24V-797. Our brand page on GMC recall checks by VIN shows how to read those statuses.

CPO versus private sale

GMC certified pre-owned can wrap remaining factory coverage plus a CPO term, which matters on a heavy SUV with expensive air suspension options on Denali trims. Still print open recalls; certification is not a substitute. Private sales need a pre-purchase inspection on a lift, with special attention to oil condition on 6.2-liter trucks and transfer case leaks on four-wheel-drive examples. Ask for service records that name GM campaign numbers, not just "oil change and tires."

On a Yukon XL especially, crawl the third-row seat mounts and the rear cargo floor for water stains. Full-size SUVs hide flood work under new carpet and a steam-cleaned headliner. If the seller will not allow a lift inspection, walk. A Denali badge does not dry out soaked wiring and modules.

History report and price

CARFAX says its reports cover title brands, odometer readings, ownership, and reported accidents, and our guide on how to read a CARFAX report helps separate parking-lot dings from frame hits. As of mid October 2026, CARFAX through us is about $5.50 guest or $4.50 member, bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. A Yukon XL that lived near the Gulf with a suspiciously new carpet smell is a flood check first, recall check second. Ask for the VIN out loud before you trust any PDF the seller already printed.
