A used Cadillac Seville from 1998-2004 is a cheap way into a V8 luxury sedan, with Consumer Guide's good-condition range at only $2,400 to $5,700, and the reason it's that cheap is the 4.6-liter Northstar V8. Before you buy one, you want evidence the engine isn't losing coolant, a clean history on any reported crash, and proof the 2002-2003 fuel tank sensor recall was done. If you can, buy a 2000-2004 car, since IIHS's Good frontal rating only covers those years.
A low price is exactly when people skip the boring checks, and with this engine that's a mistake. On Monday, October 19, 2026, I read Consumer Guide's 1998-04 Seville review, the IIHS ratings, NHTSA's recall data for every year and a long Northstar history on The Truth About Cars. Below is what holds up.
SLS or STS
Consumer Guide says the 1998 redesign kept front-wheel drive and the Northstar V8 in two tunes: 275 horsepower and 300 lb-ft in the SLS, and 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft in the sportier STS, both with a 4-speed automatic. StabiliTrak and a road-sensing electronic suspension were standard. The STS rides lower and firmer and, per Consumer Guide, can tug the steering wheel on hard launches. Both averaged just 14.8 mpg in its testing, though 2000 and later cars run on regular fuel. The STS was dropped for 2004, the last year.
Some underbody structure was shared with the Buick Park Avenue and the Oldsmobile Aurora. If you're comparing big GM sedans from those years, our used Oldsmobile Aurora guide covers that car and its V8. Check which engine and trim you're looking at with our Cadillac VIN decoder guide.
The Northstar's reputation, and what's actually documented
Most people have heard "Northstar head gaskets." Corey Lewis's Abandoned History series on The Truth About Cars says that label is misleading. The real fault, he writes, was head bolts threaded too finely, which pulled the threads out of the aluminum block over heat cycles, let coolant into the cylinders and oil, overheated the engine and then cooked the gasket. He describes it on early Northstars, typically between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. He also notes the fix for a failed Northstar was not a simple one, and on a car in Consumer Guide's $2,400 to $5,700 range, any big engine job eats most of what the car is worth.
His account is about early engines, and I couldn't find an official GM statement saying the 1998-2004 Seville is in the clear. So treat every Northstar as a candidate. Look for coolant that keeps disappearing, a sweet smell, white exhaust, overheating and brownish sludge under the oil cap. Our post on whether CARFAX shows a head gasket job explains why a report usually won't tell you.
Consumer Guide's trouble list adds rear main seal leaks (1996-99 Northstars), knocking from carbon buildup on 1998-2001 engines, a 1998 transmission slow to engage between drive and reverse, and a 1998 fuel gauge that swings between empty and full.
Recalls to check by VIN
- 2002-2003: 03V238, fuel tank pressure sensors on 4.6 V8 cars that can malfunction and let excessive vacuum damage fuel system parts; NHTSA says fuel can leak during refueling, and a leak near an ignition source can cause a fire.
- 1998-99: a generator (alternator) that can short even with the engine off (99V070).
- 2000: loose inner tie rod nuts that can let a tie rod separate (99V301), and internal ABS hydraulic unit leaks (00V114).
- 2002: missing or undertorqued steering gear bolts (02V067).
- 1998: wiper low speed that can quit (98V144). 2001: a wrong tire pressure label on cars with 17-inch tires (00V432).
NHTSA's API returned zero recalls for 2004 when I checked, and the Seville wasn't listed on the 14V355 key-ring recall that covers the DeVille. Zero results aren't a clean bill, so run the VIN through our Cadillac recall check by VIN steps.
Crash ratings, and why the year matters
IIHS tested a 2000 Seville SLS and rated it Good overall in the original moderate overlap frontal test. Its notes say the car was structurally modified for 2000 to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes, and the rating applies to 2000-04 models only. Front seat-mounted side airbags were standard from 1998, per Consumer Guide.
Reported accidents on a cheap Cadillac
On a car worth this little, a reported accident often gets fixed as cheaply as possible, and the front end of a Seville holds the radiator and cooling parts this engine can't afford to have done badly. Look for paint mismatch and warning lights, and read where on the car the report says it was hit. Check the title on NMVTIS too. For a newer certified Cadillac, see our Cadillac Certified checklist.
We're a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller and aren't affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Cadillac. As of mid October 2026, guest reports were about $5.50, member reports about $4.50 and the CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, with retail at roughly $39.99 to $44.99. The checkout page shows the current price, so go by that.
