Used Cadillac XT5 Buying Guide: 2.0T vs V6, Years, Recalls

A used Cadillac XT5 is one generation, sold from 2017 on, and the year that splits it is 2020, when a nine-speed automatic replaced the eight-speed and a 2.0-liter turbo four became the base engine. If you tow or want the quicker truck, buy the 3.6 V6. If you mostly commute, the turbo four saves fuel. Either way, run the VIN for its build-window recalls, which are small but specific, before you sign.

We pulled XT5 recall filings and review data on October 14, 2026. Consumer Reports says the XT5 arrived for 2017 to replace the heavy, dated SRX, launched with a 3.6 V6 and eight-speed automatic, and switched to the nine-speed plus the new turbo four for 2020. Car and Driver calls the 2026 model dated and says it was told a redesign is coming for 2027. Our vPIC patterns for a 2017 Premium Luxury, a 2020 Luxury and a 2024 AWD all decoded to GM's Spring Hill, Tennessee plant. Decode yours with our Cadillac VIN decoder, and if you need three rows or a body-on-frame truck, read the used Cadillac Escalade buying guide instead.

2.0 turbo four or 3.6 V6

The V6 is the better truck, and the gap is bigger on paper than it feels. Car and Driver lists a 235-hp turbo four and a 310-hp V6, both with a nine-speed, and its testing ran 6.1 seconds to 60 with an all-wheel-drive V6 and 7.6 seconds with a front-drive four. Towing is the real divider: 3,500 pounds with the V6 and only 1,000 with the four. EPA figures favor the four at 22 city and 29 highway in front-drive form against 19 and 26 for the V6. CR, oddly, says the V6 feels lethargic in daily driving and the turbo four feels more energetic. So drive both if you can, because the reviewers do not agree on which one feels better.

What 2017-2019 versus 2020+ means for you

Most of the price spread comes from the 2020 update. A 2017-2019 XT5 is V6-only with the eight-speed, and our 2017 pattern decoded with the LGX 3.6. From 2020 you can get either engine, plus the new gear selector CR mentions, and CR says 2021 improved the infotainment so you can work it by touch or with the center knob. Car and Driver's own 2020 test-car spec sheet listed the turbo at 237 hp while its current page says 235, so do not let a seller's horsepower line decide anything. The VIN tells you which engine you have.

Recalls to clear by VIN

XT5 recalls are mostly tied to short build windows, so the VIN lookup matters more than the model year. 16V-802 covers 2017 XT5s built April 16 to May 9, 2016, whose front brake caliper piston seals can tear and leak fluid. 20V-639 covers some 2020 trucks whose fuel pump jet nozzle can be blocked by a plastic burr. 22V-709 covers 2020-2021 trucks with Surround Vision whose rear camera cable connectors may be crimped wrong, about 95,231 vehicles with the XT6 and Acadia. 23V-172 covers 2022-2023 XT5s that may have an incorrect transmission sun gear, which can let the driver-side half-shaft disengage. Newer trucks have 24V-311 for a 2024 driver air bag cushion that can tear, and 24V-459 for 2023-2025 instrument panels that may not light up for turn signals or hazards. Our Cadillac recall check by VIN post covers the lookup.

Title, history and price

Read the ownership lines first, and if the report shows lease, rental or fleet use, read our post on fleet use on CARFAX. A recall lookup says nothing about accidents, flood titles or odometer jumps, and CARFAX says its reports draw on title, odometer, ownership and accident records. Honestly, a certified-looking dealer packet without the VIN printed on the report is not proof of anything. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail.
