Citroen BX Buying Guide: Hydraulics, Rust and Belts

Buy a Citroen BX on a leak-free hydraulic system and a solid structure first. Composite panels can hide rust deeper in the car, and a tired pump or spheres will ruin the ride that makes the BX worth owning.

For this November 5, 2026 guide I read Goodwood Insurance: Citroen BX buyer's guide and Classic & Sports Car: Citroen BX buyer's guide. The mechanical cautions below come from those pages; the order of checks and the questions for the seller are my own practical recommendations. Any price figures in those sources are market snapshots, not a valuation of the car in front of you. So, compare it with recent sales of the same specification and condition. I also kept the advice to things you can see, hear or ask for on a viewing day.

Test the hydropneumatic system properly

Goodwood says to check the pump, spheres and lines for leaks, raise the car to maximum height smoothly, then press the brake and confirm it stays level. Classic & Sports Car also wants leaks, strut corrosion and excessive negative camber checked. A stuttering rise is a stop sign.

Look past the plastic panels for rust

Goodwood warns that composite panels can flatter and hide corrosion deeper in the structure. Classic & Sports Car says rust often hides in the front scuttle and rear axle mounts and takes many hours to repair. Inspect inside, outside and underneath.

Date the cambelt and watch the head gasket

Classic & Sports Car lists head-gasket leaks and cambelt replacement intervals among engine checks, plus worn carbs on older petrol cars. Ask for the belt invoice. Our compression and leak-down guide helps if the cooling system looks suspicious.

Know Mk1 quirks versus Mk2 dials

Goodwood notes the 1986 facelift brought a more conventional instrument cluster, while purists may prefer early Citroen-style dials. Classic & Sports Car describes the early drum speedo and strip rev counter. Neither is a fault, but parts and taste differ.

Feel the gearbox and any 4x4 hardware

Goodwood says worn synchros are not unusual, and that 4x4 transfer boxes can fail and are complicated to fix. Try every gear. Ask what has been rebuilt.

Decide petrol or diesel before you shop

Classic & Sports Car praises the light PSA petrol engines and the class-leading 1.9 diesel economy. Goodwood also calls the turbodiesels a company-car favourite. Pick the fuel you can live with, then hunt rust and hydraulics.

Narrow the search before you fall for a badge

Goodwood warns that the number of trims and engines can baffle buyers, so decide on petrol or diesel and Mk1 or Mk2 first. Classic & Sports Car lists dozens of UK variants across eleven years. Pick the layout you can service, then look.

Prove the identity before a deposit

Match the chassis number on the BX to the title, any import papers and the plate on the car before you order a history report. Our VIN verification guide walks through that match, and imported-car report coverage sets expectations for cars that spent years overseas. Older chassis numbers may sit outside modern report databases, so confirm coverage before paying. NMVTIS covers U.S. title history only; it cannot replace foreign records or a physical inspection.

Get the repair scope in writing first

If the hydraulics leak or the scuttle is soft, get a Citroen specialist's written estimate before you agree a price. Look, a seller PDF or a folder of photos is a starting document, not independent proof of condition. Ask the inspector for written findings with local estimates, split into safety work and cosmetic wishes. The NYC consumer-agency used-car guidance tells buyers to have an independent mechanic check the car, and our pre-purchase inspection checklist helps you set the scope. Keep a dated note of the drive, the temperatures and any noises, because a seller who disputes your findings later will ask what you saw and when.

Guest reports have been about $5.50, member reports about $4.50 and a two-report bundle about $6.75; confirm the price at checkout because it can change. A report can miss unreported work, so keep the inspection appointment even when the history looks quiet.
