A used Dodge Grand Caravan is the cheapest way into a seven-seat minivan with fold-into-the-floor seats, and it is a reasonable buy if you get a well-kept 2011-2020 van, confirm the recalls for its exact year are closed, and accept dated safety tech. Skip it if you need modern driver-assist features or good small-overlap crash scores; a Pacifica, Odyssey, or Sienna costs more for real reasons.
Look at any big used-car marketplace this month and Grand Caravans are everywhere, and it is easy to see why. These vans were sold by the truckload to families, fleets, and rental companies, so there are plenty of them, and prices are low. That volume cuts both ways. In mid October 2026 the newest U.S. Grand Caravan is a 2020, which means even the youngest ones are six model years old and many have lived hard lives.
Which van this actually is
The U.S. Dodge Grand Caravan ended with the 2020 model year. CTV News Windsor reported the last one rolled off the line at Windsor Assembly in Ontario on August 21, 2020. After that the name moved to Chrysler in Canada only: The Globe and Mail explained that the Canadian Chrysler Grand Caravan is a rebadged, de-contented Pacifica, sold in the U.S. as the Chrysler Voyager. So if a cross-border listing says "2022 Grand Caravan," you are looking at a Pacifica-based van, and our used Chrysler Pacifica buying guide is the better reference. Decode the VIN with our Dodge VIN decoder walkthrough or NHTSA's vPIC decoder before you trust the ad title.
Powertrain and what C/D did not like
Car and Driver's 2020 Grand Caravan review lists a single powertrain: a 283-hp V-6 with a six-speed automatic. C/D says it shifts smoothly but hesitates to downshift when passing, and the van posted the slowest 0-60 time of the recent minivans it tested. Fuel use is the real cost. The EPA combined figure is 20 mpg, and C/D saw just 22 mpg at a steady 75 mph versus a 25-mpg highway rating. The review gave the van a 3.5 out of 10 and summed it up as "good enough for a vacation rental but not much more." That is harsh, but fair if you compare it to the newer vans.
On a test drive, listen for any ticking or tapping from the engine at idle, feel for harsh 1-2 shifts when cold, and make a few hard passing moves to see if the transmission hunts. Check every power sliding door and the liftgate through several full cycles. These are heavy, busy vans and door motors, tracks, and latches take abuse from kids.
Stow 'n Go, interior, and safety
The selling point is still the seating. C/D notes the third row folds into a well behind it and the available Stow 'n Go second-row seats drop into underfloor bins, leaving a flat load floor without pulling seats out. Pull every seat down and back up yourself. Look inside the bins for water, mildew, or a lost sippy cup that has been rotting since 2019. The 2020 van had a 6.5-inch screen with no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto at any trim, according to C/D.
Safety is the weak spot. C/D reported a four-star NHTSA rating, a Poor result in the IIHS small-overlap test, and no driver-assistance features. If you are buying this for a teen driver or long highway trips, that is worth weighing honestly against an older Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna at a similar price.
Recalls worth checking by year
I queried the NHTSA recalls API for every year from 2011 through 2020 on October 16. Highlights:
- 2010-2014 (14V234): the driver door vent window switch can overheat. Dealers swap in a revised switch.
- 2011-2012 (17V376): chafed wiring inside the steering wheel can make the driver air bag deploy unexpectedly.
- 2015-2016 (16V461): on vans built July 31, 2015 to April 18, 2016, the transmission pump may seize and cause loss of hydraulic pressure. Dealers replace the pump. Ask for proof on any van in that build window.
- 2018-2019 (18V523): rear caliper pistons with poor coating can form gas pockets and reduce rear braking. The fix is a brake bleed.
- 2019 (19V759): second- and third-row seat striker welds may fail in a crash; dealers weld in reinforcement brackets.
Wheelchair-accessible conversions add their own campaigns from the converter, such as a Vantage Mobility fuel pump gasket recall on modified 2016-2019 vans. Run the actual VIN through our Dodge recall check by VIN steps before you sign.
The history report on a minivan this common
Expect rental and fleet entries on a lot of these vans, plus long gaps where nobody reported service. A seven-seater that spent two years at an airport counter can be fine, but it usually carries more miles and more cosmetic damage than the odometer suggests. We are a licensed reseller of official CARFAX and AutoCheck reports, not affiliated with either company or Experian. Expect around $5.50 for a guest CARFAX, about $4.50 for members, or roughly $6.75 for the bundle, compared with $39.99-$44.99 at retail; confirm at checkout because prices shift. Then check title brands on NMVTIS, since a flood-titled van can be washed clean through a state that brands differently.
