Used Ford Bronco Sport Buying Guide: Not a Bronco, 1.5 vs 2.0T

A used Ford Bronco Sport is not a body-on-frame Bronco. It is a 2021-on Escape-based small SUV with Bronco styling, available 1.5-liter three-cylinder or 2.0-liter turbo four (Badlands), and a long NHTSA recall list -- including fuel-injector fire campaigns on many 1.5L cars. In mid October 2026, clear those by VIN before you fall for the boxy photos, and cross-check our full-size Bronco guide if you actually want the ladder-frame truck.

MotorTrend's Bronco Sport overview and their first-drive coverage frame it as the car-based sibling, not the removable-top Bronco. Car and Driver covers the same split. If the listing just says "Bronco," read the window sticker: Sport is the unibody one. Our used Ford Bronco buying guide is for the bigger truck; our used Ford Escape buying guide covers the shared platform without the trail branding.

1.5 three-cylinder vs 2.0T Badlands, and the 2025 refresh

Most Bronco Sports use a 1.5-liter turbo three making about 180 hp and 200 lb-ft. MotorTrend tested an Outer Banks to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds and lists recent EPA figures around 25 city / 30 highway for that engine. The 2.0-liter turbo four -- standard on Badlands -- makes about 238 hp and 277 lb-ft; MotorTrend's testing data puts Badlands near 6.5 seconds to 60, with thirstier EPA numbers around 21 / 27. Both pair with an eight-speed automatic. Badlands also brings the stronger off-road hardware; Big Bend and Outer Banks are the daily drivers with trail cosmetics.

For 2025, MotorTrend describes a midcycle refresh: new front and rear ends, a standard 13.2-inch Sync 4 screen, a 12.3-inch driver display, wireless phone mirroring, Co-Pilot360 Assist+ standard, and a Sasquatch package on Outer Banks and Badlands with taller all-terrain rubber. Cargo stays strong for the class at about 32.5 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 65.2 folded. We've seen sellers ask near-new money for early Sports with open injector recalls -- that is backwards; fix status should move the price, not the badge.

Bronco Sport recalls to clear by VIN

NHTSA returns a long file for this model. The one we push hardest on for 1.5L shoppers is the cracked fuel-injector / underhood fire series. Campaign 22V859000 and follow-ons 24V187000 and 25V165000 covered software detection and drain-tube remedies on many 2021-2023 Sports (and Escapes). Campaign 25V467000, documented in Ford's NHTSA acknowledgement letter, expands and replaces earlier injector campaigns for certain 2021-2024 Bronco Sport and 2020-2022 Escape 1.5L vehicles; interim software updates are free, with a final hardware remedy (rail and injectors) on the schedule Ford filed.

Early 2021 cars also carried suspension campaigns such as 21V074000 for incorrect front lower control arms. Later years pick up transmission-control, wiper, and air bag sensor campaigns -- pull the year you are buying. Start with the NHTSA recalls feed for the 2021 Bronco Sport, then use our Ford recall check by VIN walkthrough. Decode with vPIC so you know whether the car is a 1.5 or 2.0 before you assume which injector campaign applies.

History report, rental flags, and pricing

Bronco Sport rented well in ski and beach markets, so check for rental or fleet lines. Our rental car history on CARFAX article shows how that appears. Match the VIN across dash, door, and title. A seller PDF that "already has CARFAX" is not your pull -- especially on a model with active fire-related campaigns.

On cost, a CARFAX through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, while retail sits around $39.99 to $44.99 as of mid October 2026. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. Avoid "$1 trial" report subscriptions. Get the CARFAX report on the exact VIN, then call a Ford dealer with that VIN for recall completion before you hand over a deposit.
