Used Ford F-150 Buying Guide: Generations, Recalls, Trims

A used Ford F-150 is still the default half-ton if you match the generation and powertrain to the job and clear the VIN on the recalls that hit that cab and screen. On 2021-2023 trucks, that means rearview camera software and moonroof deflector campaigns. On 2024-2025 3.5-liter EcoBoost trucks, it means the engine cup plug oil-leak recall. Get those answered before you argue about tow packages.

The F-150 badge covers a lot of different trucks. In mid October 2026 you can find thirteenth-generation (2015-2020) and fourteenth-generation (2021-plus) examples on the same lot, plus hybrids and, separately, Lightnings. We pulled F-150 recall filings from NHTSA on October 13, 2026, and they sort more cleanly once you decode the year and equipment with our Ford VIN decoder.

Which F-150 you are looking at

Per Car and Driver's 2021 review, the fourteenth-generation truck arrived for 2021 with six powertrains including a hybrid for the first time, three cab styles, and tow ratings that reached about 14,000 pounds on the twin-turbo 3.5-liter. Current gas trucks, per Car and Driver's latest F-150 overview, still mix a 325-hp twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6, a 400-hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter, a 400-hp 5.0-liter V-8, and a hybrid near 430 hp combined, all with a 10-speed automatic. That is a different animal from the midsize used Ford Ranger, so do not treat Ranger advice as a substitute.

2021-2023 recalls: camera software and moonroof clips

26V-489 covers about 47,587 2021-2023 F-150 trucks with 8-inch SYNC screens (plus some Super Duty models). A software error may let the home menu obstruct the rearview image in reverse. Ford planned dealer or over-the-air APIM software updates. Interim letters went out August 7, 2026. 25V-729 covers about 174,853 vehicles including 2021-2023 F-150s whose moonroof wind deflector clips may be inadequately attached so the deflector can fly off. Dealers inspect and repair the deflector. Older 2019-2020 F-150s also sit inside the broader rearview blank-image campaign 25V-442.

2024-2025: oil cup plug and brake booster software

25V-198 covers about 4,356 2024-2025 F-150, Expedition, and 2024 Navigator vehicles with 3.5-liter GTDI engines. A misaligned engine cup plug can cause a rapid oil leak. Dealers inspect alignment and replace the plug if needed. Letters went out May 22, 2025. On 2025 trucks, 25V-488 covers a much larger group, about 312,120 vehicles including F-150, whose electronic brake booster module may lose power assist while driving or using driver-assist features. The fix is software, often over the air. Our brand roundup on Ford recall checks by VIN shows how to read those status lines across models.

One more for 2021 trucks: 26V-402 includes certain 2021 F-150s among a huge park-pawl campaign where the transmission may try to engage park while moving. Interim letters went out July 10, 2026, with a fuller remedy still rolling out. Do not ignore an open line just because the truck "shifts fine" on a short test loop.

CPO, private sale and history cost

Ford certified pre-owned can add inspection and warranty coverage, but it does not erase open recalls. Still demand a dealer printout. Consumer Reports' F-150 coverage is useful for ownership patterns once the VIN is clean. Private sales are cheaper, so budget an independent inspection and a lift check for oil leaks around the 3.5 EcoBoost. CARFAX says its reports show title brands, odometer readings, ownership, and reported accidents, and our guide on how to read a CARFAX report helps. As of mid October 2026, CARFAX through us is about $5.50 guest or $4.50 member, bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. A flood-state F-150 with a new bed liner and a "camp truck" story is still a title problem first.
