Used Ford Freestyle Buying Guide: CVT, Third Row, Recalls

The Ford Freestyle you can buy today is a 2005, 2006 or 2007 three-row crossover wagon, and every one has a 203-hp 3.0-liter V6 tied to a CVT, with front- or all-wheel drive. That leaves condition, CVT service history and recall status as the real choices. If you can stretch, a 2007 built after September 2006 has standard side airbags. Ford updated the wagon with a bigger V6 for 2008 and sold it as the Taurus X, so a Freestyle badge means a car at least 19 model years old.

I spent part of Sunday evening, October 18, 2026, reading Consumer Guide's 2005-07 Freestyle review, the IIHS page for the 2007 model, and NHTSA's recall data for each year. Consumer Guide still calls it a Recommended family wagon. It also says plainly that it feels slow from a stop.

What you're getting

Freestyle came in SE, SEL and Limited trims. Standard seating was six, with second-row buckets and a stowable third row; an optional 60/40 second-row bench made it a seven-seater. Consumer Guide says the third row is surprisingly roomy for adults, the front passenger seat folds flat for a 9.5-foot load floor, and the third row drops into a well in the cargo floor. Limited models got second-row buckets that slide fore and aft. The AWD system has no low range and was never meant for trails, and towing is rated at just 2,000 pounds. So it's a wagon. A good one, but a wagon.

For 2006 the only notable change was available navigation. For 2007, front side airbags and three-row curtain airbags became standard. IIHS adds a wrinkle: side airbags were standard only on 2007 Freestyles built after September 2006, and optional on anything built in September 2006 or earlier. Its Good side rating came from a test car with the optional airbags. Check the build month on the driver door label.

The CVT question

The CVT is the part everyone asks about, and I didn't find a fetchable, reputable source putting a failure rate on it, so I won't invent one. What Consumer Guide does say is specific. The CVT lets engine revs race ahead of road speed, which helps passing but makes the engine loud; a test AWD Limited did 0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds. In a separate piece on short-lived wagons, Consumer Guide's Daily Drive blog says the 3.0 was constantly working outside its comfort zone, giving a lot of noise for modest motion. Look, a car with a stack of fluid-service receipts is worth more to me than a cleaner-looking one with none. Have a shop that knows Ford CVTs scan it and drive it before you agree on price.

Trouble spots and service bulletins

Consumer Guide lists rear brakes that drag and get noisy after sitting (2005-06), slow cold starts fixed by PCM reprogramming (2005-06), tanks that fill slowly with nozzle click-offs (2005-07), heated seats that quit from a cracked solder joint (2005-06), steering squeak at low speed (2005-07), cold-weather rear suspension noise (2005-06), and on 2005 cars water on the front floor from a firewall grommet plus CVT idle wander needing a PCM update. Ford's TSB 11-10-21 covers idle fluctuation on 2005-2007 Freestyle 3.0 models with a PCM reflash and throttle-body cleaning.

Recalls by year

  • 05V515 (2005): fuel tank straps can break, dropping the tank and heat shield onto the driveshaft (AWD) or exhaust (FWD). Dealers replace both straps.
  • 06V383 (2005-2006): water intrusion can freeze the side door latches on cars registered in listed cold-weather states. On Freestyles, dealers also seal a drain hole in the rear door window trim.

The 2007 Freestyle came back with zero results when I queried the API, which tells you nothing about one particular car. Run the VIN through our Ford recall check by VIN walkthrough or NHTSA's 2005 Freestyle recall list, and confirm AWD versus FWD with our Ford VIN decoder guide.

Freestyle versus its siblings

The Five Hundred sedan and Mercury Montego share the platform, engine and those fuel-strap and latch recalls. Our used Ford Five Hundred buying guide is the better read if you don't need the third row, since some sedans got a six-speed automatic instead of the CVT. If you want a three-row Ford that's newer and has more power, our used Ford Flex guide covers the boxier wagon that came after. Consumer Guide put the Freestyle's good-condition range at $5,000 to $11,200 when I checked, which is a guide, not a quote.

Report, then inspection

Family haulers this age have usually lived hard lives, and a flood-washed or salvage-branded wagon from another state can show up with a clean-looking local title. Check NMVTIS for brands and read CARFAX's report overview to see what a report can and can't catch. We're a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller with no ties to CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Ford. Around mid October 2026 we charge guests about $5.50, members about $4.50, and about $6.75 for the bundle, while retail sits near $39.99 to $44.99. Whatever checkout shows is the real price, so confirm it there.
