The used Pontiac Solstice to shop is a 2006-2009 roadster or a 2009 targa coupe, base 2.4 or turbocharged GXP, with proof that the GM ignition switch, key cylinder and passenger airbag sensor recalls were done. A 2010 Solstice technically exists, but Consumer Guide says only 20 were built and all went to GM employees, so ignore any listing that leans on "rare 2010" as a selling point without paperwork. Budget for an inspection that covers the soft top, the rear differential and the fuse block, because those are where Consumer Guide's trouble list lands.
Sunday, October 18, 2026, I ran every Solstice model year through NHTSA's recall API, read Consumer Guide's 2006-09 Solstice review, and read GM's dealer bulletin for the airbag-sensor recall on NHTSA's file server. Little of what follows will show up on a history report, which is why it's worth reading before you look at one.
Years, engines and the coupe
Pontiac launched the Solstice for 2006 as a two-seat, rear-drive rival to the Mazda MX-5, sharing its architecture with the Saturn Sky that arrived for 2007. The base engine is a 177-hp 2.4-liter four with a five-speed manual or, from later in 2006, a five-speed automatic. The GXP joined for 2007 with a 260-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four and standard stability control; the base car never offered it, and no Solstice ever had side airbags. OnStar became standard for 2008. For 2009 a coupe with a removable roof panel arrived, and Consumer Guide's Daily Drive history says just 1,152 coupes were built that year. Pontiac recommends premium fuel for both engines, which matters more on the turbo.
What living with one is like
Consumer Guide likes the steering and balance and is blunt about the rest: hard plastic, squeaks and rattles, buzzy engines, gauges sunk in deep tunnels, and tight space for six-footers. The manual top can't be raised or lowered without getting out to work the mechanism, roof pegs and trunk lid. Top down, the trunk holds little more than a briefcase. Honestly, that's the deal you're signing up for. If you want a roadster you can use for a weekend trip, our used Mazda Miata buying guide covers the car Consumer Guide says the Solstice matches for fun but not for practicality.
Trouble spots Consumer Guide lists
- A/C growl or buzz from loose compressor bolts, a rubbing evaporator tube or a buzzing expansion valve (2006-08), and A/C that warms up at speed until the condenser is upgraded (2006-07).
- No-start, start-and-die or long cranking from twisted terminals in the underhood fuse block connector (2006-08).
- Keys hard to remove from the ignition, with an improved lock cylinder available (2006-09).
- Convertible tops that don't seat, leak at the rear window, rattle when stowed or won't fully raise because a drive link socket comes loose (2006-07).
- Rear differential fluid leaks fixed with a vent hose (2006-07).
Recalls you need closed
The API listed these for the Solstice. 14V047 is the ignition switch recall: GM expanded it to 2006-2007 Solstices in February 2014, then to 2008-2010 cars that may have received the bad switch as a service part. The switch can move out of run, and the airbags may not deploy. 14V171 covers 2006-2010 cars where the key can come out when the ignition isn't off, creating a rollaway risk. 17V061 covers a passenger-seat sensor mat that can bend and switch off the front passenger airbag. 07V589 replaces a leaky rear axle pinion seal on 2006-07 cars, and 07V454 checks seat stud fasteners on 2008s.
One contradiction worth knowing: the API text for 17V061 still says the remedy is under development, while GM's 17036 bulletin, revised February 2018, says a permanent repair is available. Ask for the repair order either way. Our GM ignition switch recall check explains how to confirm that work, and our Pontiac recall check by VIN guide covers the lookup itself.
What the report won't tell you
A clean history report won't mention a top that leaks onto the carpet, a turbo car that's been tuned, or a differential that's been weeping for years. It also can't tell a GXP from a base car if the badges got swapped. Decode the VIN with our Pontiac VIN decoder walkthrough and check the engine against the listing. Pull the carpet back in the footwells and smell for mildew. A cheap convertible with a damp floor is one of the classic flood-wash setups.
Running the history check
Search NMVTIS for title brands, then pull a report you bought yourself, not a printout the seller hands you. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller and aren't affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or GM. As of mid October 2026, single reports are about $5.50 for guests and about $4.50 for members, with the bundle near $6.75; retail runs roughly $39.99 to $44.99. Prices change, so the checkout screen has the last word.
