A used GMC Sonoma is a Chevy S-10 with GMC trim, so the buying advice is mostly about which generation, which engine and how hard the truck was worked. For most shoppers the right one is a 1994-2004 truck with the 4.3-liter V6. Consumer Guide puts good-condition prices for that generation at roughly $1,400 to $8,200. The one Sonoma that breaks every rule is the 1991-92 Syclone, a turbocharged collector truck that Hagerty values far above any regular pickup, and it gets cloned.
I went through Consumer Guide's Sonoma file, Edmunds' 1991 notes, Hagerty's Syclone valuation and NHTSA's recall data for every model year on Oct 19, 2026. If you've already read our used Chevy S-10 guide, the mechanical story is close to identical. What changes is the names on the paperwork, a couple of GMC-only trucks, and a few recall details that matter when you're decoding a GMC VIN.
Two generations under one name
The Sonoma name started earlier than most people think. Edmunds describes the 1991 Sonoma as the S15 pickup with a new name and a facelift, a new grille, fresh trim and restyled wheels, and says the old Sierra Classic trim became SLE. So a 1991-93 Sonoma is the boxy first-generation truck, and Edmunds' 1991 page lists 2.5-liter four and 4.3 V6 versions. The truck most people mean was redesigned for 1994 and ran through 2004.
- 1994 -- new body about 10 inches longer, according to Consumer Guide, with a 2.2-liter four, a 4.3 V6 and an "enhanced" 4.3 with more power. Four-cylinder trucks got rear ABS; V6 trucks got four-wheel ABS.
- 1996 -- Vortec V6 rated 180 hp (170 in 2WD), four-wheel ABS on every Sonoma, and a driver-side third door option on the SLS Club Coupe, which is GMC's name for the extended cab.
- 1998 -- facelift and a passenger airbag with a shutoff switch.
- 2001 -- four-door Crew Cab with a 4.6-foot box.
- 2003 -- the ZRX Street Rider package for 2WD SLS short beds, with a power sunroof.
- 2004 -- only the 4WD Crew Cab was left.
Trims ran SL, SLS and SLE. Consumer Guide's June 2000 price list shows 4WD models of every trim came with the 190-hp V6 and four-wheel disc brakes, while 2WD SLs started with the 2.2 and a five-speed. Decode the VIN on our GMC VIN decoder before you trust the badge on the tailgate.
The Syclone and why the VIN matters more
Hagerty's June 2025 valuation report describes the Syclone as a Sonoma regular cab with a turbocharged, intercooled 4.3 rated 280 hp, all-wheel drive and a tuned suspension. Only 2,998 were built, and Hagerty says 3 of those were 1992 models. Its good-condition value was $31,800 and concours $75,700 at that point. Hagerty also flagged in September 2017 that Syclone prices had plateaued after a big run-up, so I'd treat any asking price as a negotiation.
A black regular-cab Sonoma dressed up to look like one isn't hard to put together. A history report will show title brands and recorded mileage, but it won't tell you the turbo is original. Get the VIN decoded, check that the paperwork matches, and pay a shop that knows these trucks before you spend Syclone money. Marlboro editions, which Hagerty says need documentation, are a whole other level of risk.
What goes wrong on the regular trucks
Consumer Guide's trouble list for 1994-2004 includes knock in the 4.3 on 1994-95 trucks (often fixed with a check-valve oil filter, with revised computer chips and even main bearings as GM's next steps), an EGR valve sticking open on 1994 trucks, a fuel pump that keeps running after shutoff on 1994-95, and overheating from a rough radiator filler neck on 1999-2000. On 2001-03 trucks the HVAC can get stuck on vent because a leaking vacuum switch on the transfer case lets oil into the control head. Honestly, a 25-year-old pickup with none of these is the surprise.
Consumer Guide also calls the brake pedal spongy, with a lot of travel before anything happens. Drive it before you assume something is broken, but don't wave off a pedal that keeps sinking.
Recalls NHTSA lists for the Sonoma
I pulled these from NHTSA's recall data under make GMC, model Sonoma. Run the VIN through our GMC recall check steps too.
- 99V193 (1991-96) -- on 4WD trucks with ABS built from September 1989 to August 1996, the switch that tells the ABS which drive mode it's in could fail and lengthen stops in 2WD.
- 97V096 (1994-97) -- seat belt webbing could separate on some extended cabs.
- 96V035 (1996) -- some 2WD 2.2 trucks with the five-speed got transmission parts that weren't machined to spec and could lock the rear wheels.
- 97V008 (1996) -- overbaked primer made the paint peel, so the windshield might not stay in place in a crash. NHTSA's remedy text says all affected vehicles were repurchased, so a 1996 truck shouldn't still be waiting on this one.
- 97V146 (1996-97 4.3) -- front brake line rubbing on the oil pan.
- 1998 -- 97V218 rear brake pipe fatigue, 97V208 an underhood wiring clip that could melt onto the exhaust manifold, 00V220 daytime running lights.
- 2000 -- 99V220 2WD ABS tube nuts, 00V055 an ABS motor clip, and 00V258 a door label that overstated payload.
- 04V132 (2003-04) -- wrong air bag warning labels.
NHTSA returned zero recalls for 2002 and only aftermarket parts for 1999. Look, that's not proof a truck is clean. Ask a GMC or Chevrolet dealer to run the actual VIN.
Before you hand over cash
Check the title on NMVTIS, then pull a full report for owners, odometer readings and damage events. A lot of these trucks spent years as fleet or utility trucks, and that tends to show up as plain registration records rather than anything dramatic. If you want something newer from GMC, our used GMC Canyon guide covers the replacement.
