The Hyundai Veracruz, sold for 2007 through 2012, is a quiet, comfortable three-row crossover that's cheap to buy now, and the one thing you must confirm is the valve cover gasket recall. Every model year is covered by it: oil can leak from the front cylinder bank onto the alternator, the charging system quits, and the engine can stall while you're driving. Hyundai recalled it twice, so ask for proof of both. On a 2010-2012 car, also clear the ABS module fire recall before it sleeps in your garage.
On Sunday, October 18, 2026, I pulled every Veracruz year from NHTSA's recall API and read Consumer Guide's 2007-12 Veracruz review. Look, a 14-to-19-year-old SUV is going to have some history. The point of this page is to help you tell normal wear from the stuff that strands you on a highway.
What the Veracruz is
It was Hyundai's largest model when it arrived for 2007, built in South Korea, about 4 inches longer in wheelbase and 6 inches longer overall than the Santa Fe of the same years. Every one has a 260-hp 3.8-liter V6 and a six-speed automatic, with front-drive or an AWD system that has no low range. Trims were GLS, SE and Limited until the SE was dropped for 2009, and the 2012 got a new grille and available heated second-row seats in its final year. Stability control and curtain air bags for all three rows were standard. Consumer Guide says it rivals many premium SUVs for quiet but leans in corners, rates towing at 3,500 pounds, and says the third row suits kids best with only grocery-bag space behind it.
Recalls to confirm
- 14V415, 2007-2012: the front valve cover gasket can leak oil onto the alternator, killing the charging system, and the engine loses power. Hyundai's number is 121.
- 20V705, 2007-2012: a follow-up for cars already done under 14V415, because oil may still leak. Owner letters went out September 7, 2021, so a car that changed hands since then may never have been seen. Hyundai's number is 197.
- 23V651, 2010-2012: the ABS module can leak brake fluid internally and short, which can start an engine compartment fire while parked or driving. Hyundai told owners to park outside until the new fuse is installed. Letters went out April through October 2024.
- 11V472, 2007-2008: the driver air bag clock spring can wear, so the air bag may not deploy. It covers cars built December 26, 2006 through March 21, 2008.
- 09V122 and 13V113: stop lamp switch recalls for 2007-2008 and 2008-2011 cars. Brake lights may fail, and on the later campaign cruise control may not cancel.
Two more involve towing. Hyundai-supplied Thule trailer wiring converter modules on 2007-2008 cars can overheat, and so can CURT tow package wiring, part 56024, sold for 2009-2011 Veracruz and Kia Sorento models. If the car has a hitch, look at the wiring. Our Hyundai recall check by VIN shows how to confirm what's open, and the Hyundai VIN decoder guide helps you tell an AWD car from a front-drive one.
Smaller faults to listen for
Consumer Guide lists squeaky rear disc brakes on 2007-2010 cars until revised pads go in, and a whining power steering pump on 2007-2009 cars that's often a clogged filter screen in the fluid reservoir. Hard starting and rough running in cold weather on 2007-2010 cars needed an engine computer reflash. A 2007 could misfire from failed front oxygen sensors, or drain its battery if the hood was left open too long. Hairline cracks in 2007-2008 taillight lenses had a replacement campaign. Fuel economy is poor either way, with EPA ratings around 15/22 mpg for 2008, so budget for it.
When the report shows an accident
An old crossover with a reported accident isn't automatically a pass, but it changes what you pay and what you check. Ask what was hit, look for uneven panel gaps and overspray, and have a shop put it on a lift before you agree on a number. If the history shows air bag deployment, make sure the bags and sensors were replaced with proper parts. A dealer who says "minor damage" without the repair invoice is asking you to take a lot on faith.
Veracruz vs Santa Fe, Sorento and CX-9
Our used Hyundai Santa Fe guide starts at 2013, so it doesn't cover the smaller Santa Fe that sold alongside the Veracruz. The used Kia Sorento guide covers Kia's three-row option from 2011 on, and Consumer Guide names the Mazda CX-9 as a Veracruz rival, which our used Mazda CX-9 guide covers. If budget allows, a newer car from those guides avoids the Veracruz's age, though not every recall problem.
Checks and report costs
Title washing and doctored seller printouts are the cheap tricks on cars like this, so search NMVTIS for brands and pull your own report. We're a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Hyundai. As of mid October 2026, it's about $5.50 per guest report, near $4.50 for members, and roughly $6.75 for both reports, compared with $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Confirm the amount on the checkout screen, since that's the one that gets charged.
