Used Kia Sorento Buying Guide: Generations and Recalls

A used Kia Sorento is a reasonable three-row buy if you pick the generation on purpose and clear the VIN against the engine and fire recalls that hit specific years. On 2012-2014 models, that means confirming the engine bearing campaign was inspected or the engine replaced. On 2021-2023 models, it means the transmission fail-safe and blower motor fire campaigns. And on any 2011-2022 key-start Sorento, ask whether Kia's anti-theft software was installed.

We pulled every Sorento recall NHTSA had for 2011 through 2026 on October 13, 2026, and it came back with 37 entries. Most are small. A handful are not, and they cluster in a way that makes sense once you know which body style you are looking at. In mid October 2026, the cheapest Sorentos on listings tend to be the oldest ones, and the oldest ones are where the engine paperwork matters most. So start with the year, not the price.

Which Sorento generation you are looking at

Kia's own service bulletins split the recent Sorento into three codes: XMa for roughly 2011-2015, UMa for 2016-2020, and MQ4a for the 2021-and-later body. Car and Driver's 2021 review describes that last one as a full redesign on a new, bigger platform, with a 191-hp 2.5-liter four, an available 281-hp turbo 2.5, and a hybrid added to the lineup. The current Car and Driver page says the Sorento got a mid-cycle refresh for 2024 and carries into 2026 with the same two gas engines, an eight-speed automatic, and a 4000-pound max tow rating on the X-Pro. Decode the car with our Kia VIN decoder before you compare prices, because a 2020 and a 2021 are different vehicles even if the listing photos look close.

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid

Per Car and Driver's Sorento Hybrid page, the regular hybrid pairs a turbo 1.6-liter with an electric motor for 227 hp and a six-speed automatic, and the plug-in version makes 261 hp combined with an 11.8-kWh battery good for roughly 29 to 30 miles of electric driving. The hybrid tows only 2000 pounds, versus 3500 for the gas model, so check that number before you hitch anything heavier than a small utility trailer to one. Car and Driver also logged 25 mpg in a PHEV on its 75-mph highway test, so a plug-in that never gets plugged in is not saving much. Ask the seller how they charged it. A blank stare is an answer.

Engine recalls to clear by VIN

The big one for older Sorentos is 17V-224, covering about 618,160 Kia vehicles including 2012-2014 Sorento models. Machining errors could cause premature engine bearing wear, and dealers inspect the engine and replace it if needed. Engines replaced under that campaign or the related knock sensor program then fell under 18V-907, because the high-pressure fuel pipe may have been damaged or misaligned during the swap. 20V-750 adds 2012-2013 Sorentos to a group of Kias where an engine compartment fire can occur while driving, with an inspection, repairs up to engine replacement, and a knock sensor software update. Our Hyundai and Kia engine recall used car check explains how these campaigns overlap. A 2017 Sorento with the 3.3 V-6 can also appear in 17V-586, a crankshaft heat-treat campaign that covered only 62 vehicles.

2021-2023 models: transmission and fire campaigns

22V-760 covers about 69,038 2021-2022 Sorento and K5 vehicles whose limited-mobility fail-safe mode may not work after a transmission oil pump fault, which can mean a complete loss of drive power. Dealers inspect and replace the transmission as needed and update the control software. 25V-649 covers about 39,536 2021-2023 Sorentos whose HVAC blower motor wiring may be inadequate and could start a fire. Dealers replace the wiring and blower resistor. On 2016-2022 Sorentos with a factory or dealer tow hitch module, 22V-703 tells owners to park outside until the fix is done because debris and moisture can short the module. That is a hard stop if it shows open.

The theft software question

Kia's service bulletin CS2304, filed with NHTSA, adds anti-theft ignition logic to certain 2011-2022 Sorento models built without an engine immobilizer. Kia's owner letter called it a free, limited-time upgrade. That letter is a few years old now, so in October 2026 the useful move is to ask a Kia dealer to look up the VIN and tell you whether the upgrade is on the car. If it is not, ask the dealer to do it, and use a steering wheel lock in the meantime.
