Used Nissan Pathfinder Buying Guide: CVT vs 9-Speed

A used Nissan Pathfinder makes sense if you decide first between the 2013-2020 generation with a CVT and the 2022-and-later redesign with a nine-speed automatic, then clear the VIN on that generation's recalls. Older trucks need the hood latch, brake light switch, and ABS actuator campaigns answered. The 2022 redesign had a run of seat and latch campaigns in its first year. Get those printouts before you talk price.

The Pathfinder name has meant a lot of different vehicles. Car and Driver's current Pathfinder page calls the latest one the fifth generation and is blunt that it is now a family hauler more than the body-on-frame off-roader it once was. In mid October 2026, used listings are mostly split between the curvy 2013-2020 crossover and the squarer 2022-and-later model. NHTSA's 2021 Nissan model list has no Pathfinder at all, and Car and Driver compares the 2022 straight against the outgoing 2020, so a listing that says 2021 Pathfinder deserves a second look at the VIN. When we pulled Pathfinder recalls from NHTSA on October 13, 2026, the 2013-2020 years and the 2022 launch year held most of the entries.

2013-2020: the CVT generation

This generation used a 3.5-liter V-6 with a continuously variable transmission. Car and Driver's 2017 review notes that direct injection pushed output from 260 to 284 hp that year, alongside a styling update, so a 2017-2020 truck is a slightly different animal from a 2013-2016. We are not going to tell you a CVT is doomed, because we have not seen a source we trust put a hard number on it for this model. What we will tell you is that a seller with service records showing fluid changes is a better bet than one who shrugs. Consumer Reports' Pathfinder reliability pages are worth reading by year before you commit.

Recalls on these years are worth running by VIN. 22V-420 covers about 322,671 2013-2016 Pathfinders whose secondary hood latch may stay unlatched when the hood is shut. Dealers replace the bell crank, and owner letters for the final fix went out March 26, 2025, nearly three years after the filing, so do not assume an older truck already has it. 21V-020 covers about 264,431 2013-2015 trucks where the brake light switch relay can stick on, which can also let the shifter leave Park without a foot on the brake. On the very first 2013 builds, 14V-142 addressed a CVT oil cooler hose that could detach and leak fluid.

2017-2019: the ABS actuator warning

18V-601 and its expansion 19V-807 cover Pathfinders from 2017 through 2019 along with several other Nissan and Infiniti models. The ABS actuator pump may leak brake fluid onto its circuit board. NHTSA's notes say that if the ABS warning light stays on for more than 10 seconds after startup, owners should park outdoors away from structures and not drive it. On a test drive, watch that light. If it hangs around, walk.

2022 and later: nine-speed, three rows, early seat campaigns

Per Car and Driver's 2022 review, the redesign kept the 284-hp 3.5 V-6 but dropped the CVT for a nine-speed automatic and added available second-row captain's chairs. The current page lists 3500 pounds of towing on S, SV, and SL, and up to 6000 pounds on Rock Creek, Platinum, and SV or SL with the Premium package. Check the trim and package before you trust a "tows 6000" line in a listing.

The 2022 launch year had several campaigns. 21V-743 covers about 5,895 trucks whose second-row seat back frames may have weak welds. 21V-742 covers about 10,082 trucks whose third-row headrests may move or detach. 21V-706 covers about 3,030 trucks whose secondary hood latch bracket welds may let go. Later years have smaller ones: 23V-268 on 2023 driver power seats, 24V-176 on 2024 lap belt pretensioners, and 25V-173 on about 1,430 2025 Murano, Pathfinder, and QX60 vehicles whose front brake calipers could break.

Decode the truck with our Nissan VIN decoder and run open campaigns with our Nissan recall check by VIN steps. Our guide on how to read a CARFAX report covers title and accident lines, which matter more on a three-row SUV that may have been a rental. If the Pathfinder does not feel right, compare it with our used Honda Pilot buying guide. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. A fresh carpet smell and a too-clean underbody on a Gulf Coast Pathfinder is a flood question first.
