Used Jeep Liberty Buying Guide: 2002-2012 Years, Fuel Tank Hitch Recall and Rust Checks

The used Jeep Liberty to buy is a 2008-2012 with the 3.7 V6, 4WD, and a rust-free underside, or a 2002-2007 if the fuel tank hitch recall (13V252) and the ball joint and rear control arm recalls all show done for that VIN. Consumer Guide calls it a "Trail Rated" compact that kept Jeep's off-road chops, and it drives like a small truck. Skip any Liberty with a reported rear-end crash until you've seen the hitch and the tank area on a lift.

I pulled every Liberty model year, 2002 through 2012, from NHTSA's recall API on Sunday morning, October 18, 2026, and got 37 distinct campaigns, a handful of them for aftermarket lights and parts. For the truck itself I used Consumer Guide's 2002-07 and 2008-12 reviews. Car and Driver's 2014 Cherokee first drive describes the new car as smaller-feeling than "the boxy, upright Liberty that it supplants," which is the end of the story.

Which Liberty

The first-generation truck (KJ, 2002-2007) offered a 150-hp 2.4 four with a manual only, or the 210-hp 3.7 V6 with a manual or a four-speed automatic, and Consumer Guide says about 85 percent of buyers took the V6. A 160-hp 2.8 turbodiesel arrived for 2005 and was gone after 2006, and the gas four was dropped for 2006. Ride height came down about an inch partway through 2002. Towing was 5,000 pounds, best in its class at the time.

The second generation (KK, 2008-2012) used only the 3.7 V6, with a six-speed manual for 2008 and the automatic alone after that, in rear-drive or 4WD form. Look for the huge Sky Slider canvas roof, and make sure it closes and seals. Consumer Guide's verdict is fair: "Liberty never lets you forget it's a truck." Expect body lean, a coarse-sounding engine, and fuel economy that ran from about 15.5 to 18 mpg in its tests. If you want a car that rides like a car, our used Jeep Cherokee guide covers the crossover that replaced it, and the Patriot guide covers the cheaper, more carlike Jeep sold alongside it.

The rear-impact fuel tank recall, and why accidents matter here

In June 2013, after NHTSA asked for a recall of older Grand Cherokees and 2002-2007 Libertys over post-crash fires, Chrysler's letter to NHTSA said the vehicles weren't defective but agreed to a voluntary recall that adds a trailer hitch "to better manage the crash forces" in low-speed rear impacts. CBS News reported that NHTSA counted 51 deaths in fiery crashes in Jeeps with tanks behind the rear axle, and that trucks with broken or non-Chrysler hitches would get new ones too.

So on a KJ, read the accident section of the history report closely. A reported rear-end hit, an aftermarket hitch, or no hitch at all means the recall work may not have been done or may have been undone by a body shop. Get under the truck and look at the hitch and the tank.

Other recalls to clear by VIN

  • Ball joints: 03V460 (2002-2003 lower ball joints losing lubrication), 06V288 (2002-2006 lower ball joints, contamination), and 09V119 (2002-2003 upper ball joints in salt-belt states). Any of them can end with a separation and lost steering.
  • Rear lower control arms, 2004-2007: 12V085 covered salt-belt trucks, and 18V278 expanded it, because corroded arms can fracture. Dealers replace the arms.
  • Air bag module, 2002-2003: 12V527 and then 15V046, for front and side air bags or pretensioners that can deploy on their own while driving.
  • Park pawl, 2005-2006 with the 42RLE automatic: 05V460, a cup plug that can let the truck fail to hold in Park.
  • 2011-2012: 11V315 (2011 steering column pivot rivet) and 13V282 (active head restraints that may not deploy in a rear impact).

Check the VIN on the NHTSA recalls API or nhtsa.gov, and on Mopar's owner site. Our Jeep recall check by VIN post explains reading the results.

Trouble spots Consumer Guide lists

On 2002-04 2.4 engines, a snapping noise around 600 to 1,400 rpm traces to camshaft bearing caps. 2005-06 automatics can be slow to engage after sitting overnight because of a split filter in the cooler return line. 2006-07 trucks can have flickering dash lights fixed by a new body control module, and 2008-09 trucks can have MyGIG radio trouble and a check engine light in freezing weather that takes an improved throttle body. On a 2002, a wet passenger floor can be a clogged A/C evaporator drain. That's worth knowing before you assume a flood, and worth checking before you assume it isn't one.

Decode the VIN with our Jeep VIN decoder guide to confirm the engine and drivetrain, since a "4x4" badge is easy to add. Search NMVTIS for salvage and flood brands, then pull a full report. Older Jeeps get traded for cash a lot, and a seller's printed report can be for a different truck entirely.
