For most people a used Lexus LS means a 2018-or-newer LS 500 with its fuel-pump recall closed, or a late V8 LS 460 if you want the old-school flagship for a lot less money. Lexus ended the LS after the 2026 model year, so every one you find from here on is a used car, and buying the right one comes down to recall paperwork, a clean title, and accepting what a big luxury sedan costs to run.
That ending is official. The Lexus newsroom release from September 2025 calls the 2026 LS 500 AWD Heritage Edition a final-year tribute, limited to 250 U.S. cars at $99,380 including delivery. Car and Driver's report adds that a Lexus spokesperson confirmed the LS 500h hybrid was dropped after 2025. So if you were waiting for a new one, that window closed.
The two used LS cars you will see
The fifth-generation LS 500 arrived for 2018 and changed the formula. C/D's 2018 LS first drive lists a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6 with 416 hp and 442 lb-ft and a 10-speed automatic, in rear- or all-wheel drive. The LS 500h paired a 3.5-liter V6 with two motors for 354 hp combined. C/D said the new car replaced the LS 460's 4.6-liter V8, which made 386 hp and 367 lb-ft but had to rev to 4,100 rpm for peak torque. The V6 car is quicker; C/D's later test hit 60 mph in 5.0 seconds.
The LS 460 is the V8 car most used shoppers mean when they say "old LS." NHTSA recall filings list it from the 2007 model year, with a long-wheelbase LS 460 L and an LS 600h L hybrid alongside it. C/D's 2018 review mentions that the shorter non-L car had already been discontinued by then. Check the VIN, not the badge, because trunk lids get rebadged.
If the LS feels like too much car, our used Lexus ES buying guide covers the smaller front-drive sedan. It is a much simpler car, and the LS is a different animal in size and parts cost.
What reviewers did not love
C/D's lows on the 2018 car were isolated driving dynamics, an overwrought spindle grille, and little mechanical character, and it said the turbo V6 lacked a real voice. That is fair. The LS 500 is built to be quiet, and if you want a sedan that feels alive in your hands, the German flagships in our used Mercedes S-Class buying guide and used BMW 7 Series buying guide are worth a drive first. Just know those bring their own repair bills.
It is also huge. C/D put the 2018 car on a 123-inch wheelbase at 206.1 inches long, close to S-Class size. Measure your garage before you drive two hours to see one. A tight older garage and a car this long do not always get along.
LS recalls I checked on October 16, 2026
The NHTSA recalls API files the LS under several names. A 2019 car shows up under "LS500," while 2021 and 2023 cars come back under plain "LS," so try both before you decide a car is clean. Here is what came back Friday evening:
- 20V012 and 20V682, fuel pump: the low-pressure fuel pump can fail and stall the engine. It covers 2013-2015 LS 460 and 2018-2020 LS 500 and hybrid cars across the two campaigns. Dealers replace the pump. The 2019 LS500 query shows both plus a brake booster campaign.
- 19V544, 2019 LS 500 and 500h: the brake booster pump can fail, turning off stability control and power braking assist.
- 24V275, 2018-2021 LS 500 and 2018-2020 hybrid with the Executive Package: parts inside the passenger seat can make the occupant sensor misread who is sitting there, which can affect air bag deployment. The NHTSA record says dealers inspect and repair the seat.
- 24V124 and 25V744, 2023-2025: camera software on cars with the Panoramic View Monitor.
- 14V647, 10V309, 10V218, older LS 460: a fuel leak at the pressure sensor on 2007-2010 cars, valve springs on 2007-2008, and a steering-control ECU on 2009-2010.
Our Lexus recall check by VIN guide walks through confirming each one. I found no open LS campaign without a listed fix this week, which is better than a lot of luxury cars we cover.
Before you hand over money
Decode the build with our Lexus VIN decoder guide so you know if it is an LS 500, a hybrid, an F Sport, AWD, or an Executive Package car with the seat recall attached. Then get a pre-purchase inspection at a shop that sees these regularly. Tires alone can sting; C/D's F Sport car rode on 20-inch run-flats in staggered sizes. And a cheap LS is usually cheap for a reason, so ask what the last owner skipped.
History report, title, and pricing
Run the VIN through NMVTIS for title brands, then read a full report for accidents, owner count, and odometer readings; the CARFAX history report page lays out what is covered. If the report shows a long gap with no service or odometer entries, call the seller and ask where the car was. CarVins resells CARFAX and AutoCheck under license and is not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian, or Lexus. In mid October 2026, single reports are running near $5.50 for guests, $4.50 for members, and around $6.75 for both together, versus about $39.99-$44.99 at retail. Confirm the final number at checkout, since it can move.
