Used Mazda B-Series Buying Guide: Mazda-Built vs Ranger Twins

A used Mazda B-Series is two different trucks wearing one name. Through 1993 it was a Mazda-built compact pickup (B2200 and B2600 in its last U.S. years); from 1994 through 2009 it was a Ford Ranger with Mazda badges, sold as the B2300, B2500, B3000 and B4000. Figure out which one you're looking at first, then check rust, the 4WD system and the recall list, which for 2004-2009 trucks includes Takata air bag campaigns, one of them a do-not-drive warning.

I pulled NHTSA's recall data year by year on Oct. 20, 2026, and read Consumer Guide's two used-truck reviews and a recent Truth About Cars junkyard piece on a 1992 B2200. Plenty of these are now cheap work trucks with 200,000-plus miles, which is fine if you know the trouble spots.

Mazda-built trucks: through 1993

The last Mazda-engineered B-Series sold here was the fourth generation, which arrived as a 1986 model. Murilee Martin's August 2026 junkyard find on a 1992 B2200 SE-5 Cab Plus lists the 2.2-liter F2 four at 85 horsepower and 118 lb-ft, with a five-speed manual standard and a four-speed automatic and 4WD optional. The B2600 used a 2.6-liter Mazda four. That's confusing, as Martin points out, because Mazda had put Mitsubishi-built 2.6 engines in its trucks for years before that. If a seller says "B2600," look at the engine and ask which one it is, since parts are different.

That 1992 truck had close to 250,000 miles, factory A/C and almost no rust, which shows how long these can last when they live somewhere dry. By Martin's math, a base truck cost about $21,217 in 2026 dollars, or $23,115 with A/C. The Cab Plus models have fold-down jump seats behind the front buckets, and most owners used that space for tools.

Ford-built trucks: 1994-2009

Mazda dealers started selling Rangers with Mazda badges after 1993, partly to stop paying the "Chicken Tax" on imported trucks, Martin writes. Consumer Guide's 1994-97 review says the B-Series kept the Ranger's dimensions but had its own hood, grille, fenders, rear quarter panels and taillamps. You could get a B2300 with a 2.3-liter four, a B3000 with a 3.0 V6 or a B4000 with a 4.0 V6, and 2WD or part-time 4WD on any of them. A driver air bag and new dash came for 1995 and a switchable passenger bag for 1996. CG's 2014-era price range was $1,200 to $3,700.

The 1998-2009 review covers the redesign: a fully boxed frame, rack-and-pinion steering, and the Cab Plus 4, which CG calls the first four-door pickup from an import brand. Those rear doors are hinged at the back and only open after the fronts do. The B4000 switched to a 207-hp overhead-cam V6 for 2001, and a 135-hp 2.3 replaced the 2.5 in the base truck. Mazda called it just the "Truck" for 2002-03, then went back to B-Series. The B3000 was gone after 2007. One thing CG mentions that matters: the part-time 4WD isn't meant for dry pavement, so ask how the truck was driven and listen for binding on tight turns.

CG's review stops at 2009, and NHTSA's lookup came back empty for 2010, so treat a "2010 B-Series" listing as a typo until the VIN says otherwise. Our used Ford Ranger guide covers the mechanical side of these years in more depth, and a Ford-badged twin usually costs a bit more, according to CG.

Recalls to check by VIN

NHTSA lists these trucks as "B-SERIES TRUCK." Searching "B2300" or "B4000" came back empty for me. Recall work this old was often done decades ago, but you won't know until you check:

  • 92V139 (1991-92): optional steel spoked wheels may have been welded badly and can crack.
  • 94V111, 94V169, 95V231, 96V024 (1994): a front fuel hose that can crack and leak, a parking brake pawl that can slip, throttle icing in extreme cold that keeps the throttle open, and master cylinder studs that can crack.
  • 09V414 (1995-97 and 2001-03) and 07V347 (1998-2002): the cruise control deactivation switch can leak, overheat, smoke or burn. These are fire recalls, so check them even if you never use cruise.
  • 97V186 (1998 with the 4.0): a fuel line routed too close to the exhaust manifold.
  • 17V806, 17V807, 23V837 (2004-06): Takata driver and passenger inflators that can rupture, plus a follow-up because some replacement passenger inflators were installed wrong. 18V038 and 18V039 (2006) tell owners not to drive the truck until it's fixed.
  • 21V162, 16V499, 17V013, 18V016 (2007-09): more Takata inflators, some tied to the states the truck was sold or registered in. 09V032 covers 220 2WD 2009 trucks with front spindles that can crack.

Any Mazda dealer can tell you whether air bag work on a specific VIN was completed. Use our Mazda recall check by VIN first, then call the dealer if anything shows as open.

What to look at in person

Start with the frame, the bed floor and the cab corners, especially on trucks that lived where roads get salted. Look under the truck for leaking fuel lines on 1994 and 1998 trucks, and check that the 4WD engages and comes back out. If you're also looking at the SUV version, our used Mazda Navajo guide covers the Mazda-badged Explorer from the same era.

Model year 2010 and older trucks are exempt from federal odometer disclosure, so a title may show no mileage at all. Run the VIN through NMVTIS for salvage and junk brands, and compare the mileage on any history report with the service stickers.
