Used Mitsubishi Outlander Buying Guide: Years, PHEV, Recalls

If you are shopping a used Mitsubishi Outlander, the 2022-and-newer truck is the one to target: it was fully redesigned for 2022, shares its 2.5-liter engine and much of its hardware with the Nissan Rogue, and still offers a small third row. The plug-in hybrid joined for 2018 on the older platform, and NHTSA's recall files group 2018-2022 PHEVs with the older gas trucks and 2023-and-later PHEVs with the new one. On a 2003-2013 truck from a road-salt state, the first job is proving by VIN that the front cross member corrosion recalls are done, because the failure there is a lower control arm coming loose.

We pulled Outlander recall filings, review notes and vPIC decodes on October 14, 2026. A 2006 pattern decoded to Mitsubishi's Mizushima plant in Japan, while our 2016, 2018, 2022 and 2023 PHEV patterns all came back from Okazaki, Japan. The 2022 decoded to a 2.5 four with a CVT, and the 2023 PHEV to a 2.4 four flagged as a plug-in hybrid. Decode yours with our Mitsubishi VIN decoder. If the Rogue connection is what sold you, our used Nissan Rogue buying guide is worth reading side by side.

Four generations, briefly

Consumer Reports sums up the history bluntly, saying the Outlander has alternated between mediocrity and competitiveness. The 2003-2006 truck had a noisy 2.4 four and unimpressive acceleration, handling and mileage, though side air bags became standard for 2006. The 2007 redesign made it competitive, first with a V6 and then with a four-cylinder from 2008 that returned 22 mpg overall in CR's testing, plus an optional third row. CR is harsh on the 2014 redesign, calling it dated and cut-rate, though the third row became standard and 2020 added forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking on all but the base trim. For 2022 the truck moved to the Rogue-based design. CR measured 25 mpg overall and says the first two rows are comfortable but the third row is tiny.

What changed for 2026

The newest gas trucks have a different engine. Car and Driver says the 2.5 four was dropped for 2026 in favor of a 174-hp turbocharged 1.5 with a CVT, front drive standard and all-wheel drive optional, with EPA ratings of 26 city and 31 highway, and its test truck returned 27 mpg on C&D's 75-mph highway loop. C&D also says the third row has very limited legroom. So if you are comparing a 2025 and a 2026 on the same lot, you are comparing two different powertrains. Honestly, if the third row is the reason you are here, sit in it, then look at our used Honda CR-V buying guide before deciding a two-row truck will not do.

Recalls to clear by VIN

Older trucks from the salt belt carry the serious file. 16V-458 covers 2003-2006 Outlanders and 2007-2013 V6 trucks originally sold or ever registered in listed salt states, whose front cross member can corrode until the lower control arms detach. 20V-279 covers 2008-2013 Outlanders in the same states for the same failure. Dealers inspect and either apply a sealer or replace the cross member, depending on how far the rust has gone. On the third-generation truck, 18V-070 covers 2014-2016 trucks whose rear caliper parking brake shafts can corrode and bind, and 20V-403 covers 2014-2019 Outlanders and 2018-2019 PHEVs whose second-row center buckle can knock the right-side buckle cover off. The liftgate is the newest one. 25V-507 covers 2014-2020 Outlanders and 2018-2022 PHEVs in a list of mostly cold-weather states, and 26V-252 expands it, with owner letters mailed June 17, 2026, for gas springs that can corrode and rupture or let the liftgate fall. On the 2022 truck, 22V-027 replaces fuel pumps. Our Mitsubishi recall check by VIN post shows the lookup, and the broader NHTSA recall check by VIN works for any make.

Title, rust and price

A recall record says nothing about accidents, flood titles or an odometer jump, and on an older Outlander the registration history matters twice: once for the title brand and once for which salt-state recalls apply. Read every state on the report. Our post on salt belt rust versus flood damage helps when the underside looks rough. Look, if the dealer hands you a report with no VIN on it or a date from last year, pull a fresh one. CARFAX says its reports draw on title, odometer, ownership and accident records. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail.
