Used Nissan Armada Buying Guide: V8 vs Twin-Turbo

A used Nissan Armada worth buying in mid October 2026 is usually a late second-gen (roughly 2021-2024) 5.6-liter V8 body-on-frame SUV -- or a carefully inspected 2025-on twin-turbo V6 redesign if you want the new cabin. Do not confuse it with a Pathfinder: the Armada shares Patrol / QX80 roots, not the unibody crossover platform. Clear fuel-pump and camera recalls by VIN before you chase Platinum Reserve stickers.

Nissan's 2017 Armada press kit describes the second generation as a body-on-frame full-size SUV with Class IV hitch hardware and up to 8,500 pounds of towing when properly equipped. Car and Driver's 2017 road test timed a V8 Armada and noted the switch from the old Titan-based first gen to the global Patrol architecture shared with Infiniti's QX80. That is the key used-market fork: 2017-2024 trucks are V8 Patrol cousins; 2025-on Armadas move to a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 and a nine-speed, per C/D's current Armada page. Our used Nissan Pathfinder buying guide covers the three-row unibody shoppers sometimes mix up with Armada ads. Our used Infiniti QX60 buying guide is the softer luxury crossover path, not the full-size ladder-frame truck.

Second-gen V8 vs 2025-on twin-turbo V6

Second-gen Armadas used Nissan's Endurance 5.6-liter V8 -- about 390 hp in early years, with a seven-speed automatic and available four-wheel drive with low range. Seating is seven or eight depending on second-row captains vs bench. MotorTrend's Armada overview keeps the model in the Tahoe / Expedition conversation on size and tow duty. A 2021 refresh brought more power, updated screens, and broader driver-assist packaging on many trims. Look, early 2017-2018 trucks can be bargains, but budget a careful pre-purchase inspection and a cold start so you hear the V8 before the seller warms it up.

For 2025 and newer, C/D lists a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 at 425 hp (460 hp on NISMO) with a nine-speed automatic, rear drive standard and four-wheel drive optional, still rated to tow up to 8,500 pounds. That redesign is scarce on the used lot in mid October 2026, so most shoppers will still be comparing late V8 Platinum and SL trucks. Confirm which generation is in the ad by year and by the engine line on the window sticker -- a mislabeled "Armada Hybrid" or Pathfinder VIN is a walk-away.

Recalls and VIN homework

We pulled NHTSA Armada recalls on October 15, 2026. Campaign 21V373000 covers certain 2020-2021 Armada (and QX80) V8 trucks whose fuel-pump impeller can swell and bind, causing pump failure. Campaign 19V654000 includes some 2018-2019 Armadas in a wider Nissan rear-camera software / image issue. Campaign 26V455000 flags incorrect GAWR text on certification labels for certain 2020-2026 Armadas with 22-inch wheels. Start with the NHTSA recalls feed for the 2021 Armada, change the year, then use our Nissan recall check by VIN guide so open campaigns show completed on the dealer printout.

Decode with NHTSA vPIC or our Nissan VIN decoder so model year and restraint data match. On the drive, feel for transmission flare on the seven-speed, check transfer-case engagement on 4WD trucks, and make sure the third-row power fold works both ways -- we've seen Platinum demos with a dead rear fold motor that sellers call "a fuse."

History report and price of the data

Full-size SUVs collect rental, fleet, and tow-vehicle miles. A former rental is not automatic junk, but price the wear on the second-row rails and hitch wiring. Never treat a seller PDF as official, and skip "$1 trial" report sites that roll into monthly billing.

On cost, a CARFAX through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, while retail sits around $39.99 to $44.99 as of mid October 2026.
