Used Nissan Frontier Buying Guide: D40 vs 2022 Redesign

A used Nissan Frontier is a solid midsize truck buy if you pick the generation on purpose: the long-running 2005-2021 D40 trucks are rugged and simple, the 2020-2021 models already have the later 3.8-liter V-6 and nine-speed, and the 2022-plus redesign keeps that powertrain on a refreshed body and suspension. Whichever you pick, clear the VIN. Parking pawl campaigns hit 2020-2022 trucks hard, and older 2008-2011 trucks still show an air bag cover recall.

The Frontier never tried to out-luxury a Tacoma or out-tow every Colorado. It tries to be a work truck you can still daily. Our used Toyota Tacoma buying guide and used Ford Ranger buying guide cover the usual cross-shop. This page is about what changes inside the Frontier family and what the VIN has to clear before you hand over a deposit in mid October 2026.

2005-2021 D40: the long-run truck, then the late V-6 swap

For most of this span the Frontier used a body-on-frame layout that dated back years, with king cab and crew cab choices and a mix of V-6 engines depending on year. Late in the run, Nissan put a new naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V-6 into the 2020 model, rated at 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet, paired with a nine-speed automatic. That powertrain carries into the redesign. Older D40 trucks can be bargains if the frame and bed are honest, but they also carry older recall lists, so do not skip the VIN because the truck looks simple.

On 2008-2011 Frontiers, 23V-067 covers about 404,690 Nissan trucks and vans whose resin emblem on the driver's air bag cover may crack and detach during deployment. Dealers replace the cover. We've seen sellers shrug that off as cosmetic. It is an air bag cover. Get it done.

2022-plus redesign: same V-6, new skin, known pawl campaigns

Per Car and Driver's 2022 review, the third-generation Frontier still rides on a frame that dates back to the early 2000s, but the suspension was revised and the rest of the truck improved. The 3.8-liter V-6 and nine-speed stay. Towing maxes out at 6,720 pounds, short of some rivals that clear 7,650, while payload rose to about 1,610 pounds. Consumer Reports calls the V-6 smooth and punchy, notes 18 mpg overall in its testing, and flags the 2022 redesign year as the reliability inflection point to watch.

Two related parking pawl recalls matter on late D40 and early redesign trucks. 22V-457 covers about 180,176 2020-2022 Frontier and Titan vehicles whose parking pawl may not engage in Park, and dealers replace the pawl pin. 22V-671 covers about 197,230 vehicles in a related campaign where Frontier owners get a TCM reflash. Nissan told owners to apply the parking brake every time until the repair is done. On 2024 trucks, 24V-479 covers about 5,929 Frontiers whose front right lower link may have an oversized ball joint; dealers replace the link.

Trim shopping matters more than people admit. King cab versus crew cab changes rear-seat reality, and Pro-4X packages add off-road hardware that a base S will not have no matter how many dealer stickers got glued on. Sit in the back seat yourself before you sign. Adults will tell you within five minutes whether the crew cab is enough. Also compare real towing needs against the 6,720-pound ceiling Car and Driver cites, because a weekend boat that weights more on paper than that number is a different truck search.

Use our walkthrough on how to read a CARFAX report for title and accident lines. Look, a seller PDF with no VIN printed on it is not a history report. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail.
