Used Oldsmobile Silhouette Buying Guide: 1997-2004 Years, Recalls, Safety

A 1997-2004 Oldsmobile Silhouette can still work as a cheap seven-seat van if you buy a late, well-kept one and accept a real safety trade-off: IIHS rated this GM minivan design Poor in its frontal offset crash test. Every Silhouette has the same 3.4-liter V6 and four-speed automatic, so you are choosing on condition and options, not engines. Consumer Guide puts good-condition prices at about $1,700 to $5,600. Run the VIN for the power sliding door recalls before you do anything else.

The Silhouette was Oldsmobile's version of the van Chevrolet sold as the Venture and Pontiac sold as the Trans Sport and later the Montana. I went through Consumer Guide's used-car file, the IIHS ratings page and NHTSA's recall data on Oct 19, 2026. Most of what goes wrong is shared with the twins, and the Olds tends to be the better-equipped one, so leather and a rear video screen show up on a lot of listings. Oldsmobile closed after the 2004 model year, which means parts come from GM dealers and the aftermarket now.

What changed by year

The 1997 redesign moved GM's minivans to steel body panels and dropped the old "dustbuster" nose. Early Silhouettes came in regular and extended lengths, with a passenger-side sliding door standard and a driver-side door optional on the long van. Consumer Guide says the 3.4 V6 made 180 hp at first and gained 5 hp for 1999.

  • 1998 -- seat-mounted front side airbags, an eight-passenger option and OnStar on the option list.
  • 1999 -- the Premiere edition, with a VCR and a flip-down screen, arrived late in the 1998 model year.
  • 2000 -- the short van was dropped. Every Silhouette from here on is the extended body with two sliding doors, and seating tops out at seven.
  • 2001 -- a stowable third row, plus standard remote entry, CD player, load-leveling suspension and OnStar.
  • 2002 -- the rear entertainment system switched from VCR to DVD.
  • 2003-2004 -- traction control became standard on front-drive vans, and 2004 brought Collector's edition badging for the final year.

So if you want the fold-away third row and a DVD screen, shop 2002 and later. Consumer Guide's long test averaged 19.2 mpg, and the testers called the brake pedal slightly mushy, which is worth keeping in mind on your test drive.

The crash test problem

Look, this is the part listings never mention. IIHS rates the 1997-2004 Silhouette Poor overall in its original moderate overlap frontal test, using a 1997 Pontiac Trans Sport. Structure was Poor, and so were the head/neck and both leg measures. IIHS describes the floor buckling and the seat tipping forward onto the dummy's head. The NHTSA scores Consumer Guide lists for a 1999 van look better, 4 stars for both front seats and 5 for the driver in the side test, but that offset result would make me think twice before putting kids in one. If safety is the main reason you want a van, a newer design will do a lot better.

Recalls to check by VIN

Start with our Oldsmobile recall check. These GM campaigns list the Silhouette in NHTSA's data.

  • 01V067 (1997-2001) -- the power sliding door could close without latching and then open while driving. A follow-up, 01V264, covers vans that got that repair from April to August 2001.
  • 04V597 (1997-2004) -- with second-row buckets and a power sliding door, a passenger holding the inside handle could get an arm pushed into the seat or armrest.
  • 98V072 (1997-98) -- on vans with traction control, the wiper linkage could rub a brake line until it leaked.
  • 98V145 (1997-98) -- uncovered second and third row seat latches that could injure fingers.
  • 98V131 (1998) -- a broken shift cable fitting could leave the van out of Park with the lever in Park.
  • 99V268 (2000 extended vans) fuel tank rollover valves, 00V228 (2000-01) seat belt buckles and 01V383 (2001) child-seat anchor wire size.
  • 02V329 (2001) and 02V222 (2002-03) -- air bag defects, including a driver inflator that could fracture at a weld.

For 2004, the only GM campaign in the data was 04V597, plus aftermarket parts recalls. A model-year list can't tell you what was fixed on one particular van, and that's the reason to check the VIN instead.

Trouble spots

Consumer Guide's list leans toward early vans. A 1997 could have dragging brakes from a pedal that didn't return fully, a weak heater in very cold weather and a windshield that cracked in the cold. 1997-98 engines may tick on a cold start. The one I'd test for on any 2000-2002 van is hard starting and stalling, which Consumer Guide traces to a corroded electrical connector under the driver's seat that can also throw off the fuel gauge. 1999-2000 vans can lose coolant through a rough radiator filler neck, so check the reservoir and sniff for coolant after the drive.

Our Pontiac Montana guide covers the twin. Compare prices across all three badges, since the Pontiac and Chevy versions are more common and sometimes cheaper for the same van underneath.

Before you pay

Decode the VIN with our Oldsmobile VIN decoder to confirm the year and body length, then run it through NMVTIS for salvage or flood brands. Family vans pile up parking-lot damage, and a seller's printout from three years ago won't show the fender bender from last winter. Open and close both sliding doors a dozen times, power and manual, and watch whether the latch catches every time.
