A 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille is one of the cheapest ways into a big, quiet V8 luxury sedan, with Consumer Guide putting good-condition prices at about $3,000 to $8,400, but you are really buying the 4.6-liter Northstar V8 and its reputation for coolant loss. The DTS is the 300-hp touring model, while the base DeVille and the DHS have 275 hp. Pay for an inspection that checks the cooling system and oil, and run the VIN for the ignition key recall that covers every year.
The 2000 redesign gave the DeVille new styling, a slightly longer wheelbase and a body two inches shorter than before. DHS (DeVille High Luxury Sedan) and DTS (DeVille Touring Sedan) replaced the old d'Elegance and Concours names. I read Consumer Guide's file, NHTSA's recall data and a Northstar engine history from The Truth About Cars on Oct 19, 2026. The short version is that these cars ride beautifully, drink premium-recommended fuel and punish owners who skip maintenance.
Trims and years
Every DeVille in this run has a Northstar V8, a four-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. Traction control and four-wheel disc ABS were standard. The DTS added StabiliTrak and a road-sensing suspension, and those were optional on the others. Front side airbags and OnStar were standard, rear side airbags optional, and DHS and DTS could have navigation and the infrared Night Vision display.
- 2001 -- a CD player became standard on the base car, with a tire-pressure monitor optional.
- 2002 -- DVD navigation, leather standard on the base model and a tire monitor standard on DHS and DTS.
- 2003 -- not much beyond the tire-pressure system.
- 2004 -- heated and cooled front seats and a heated steering wheel became available.
- 2005 -- no changes. For 2006 the car was renamed DTS, so a "DTS" listing could be either a DeVille trim or the later model.
Consumer Guide saw 14.6 to 16.7 mpg from a DTS, and 0 to 60 in about 7 seconds. That's quick for a car this size, and it's also why so many have been driven hard.
The Northstar question
The Truth About Cars' history of the Northstar says the coolant loss problems everyone calls "head gasket failures" weren't really the gasket. The head bolts were threaded too finely and lost their grip with heat cycling, pulling threads out of the aluminum block. Then coolant got into the cylinders, the exhaust and eventually the oil. A history report won't show any of this, and neither will a quick test drive on a cool day. What you can do is look for white exhaust smoke, a coolant reservoir that's low or smells burnt, oil that looks milky, and a temperature gauge that creeps up in traffic. Consumer Guide also lists engine knock on 2000-01 cars from carbon buildup, worst when cold. Honestly, a DeVille with no service records is a gamble, and the repair can cost more than the car is worth.
Recalls worth checking
Run the VIN through our Cadillac recall check. GM campaigns in NHTSA's data for the DeVille include these.
- 14V355 (2000-2005) -- weight on the key ring or a jolt could knock the ignition out of Run, cutting engine power, power steering and power brakes, and the air bags might not deploy. This is the only GM recall NHTSA lists for 2004 and 2005.
- 00V114 (2000) -- internal leaks in the brake hydraulic control unit could affect ABS, traction and stability control.
- 00V347 (2000-01) seat belt buttons that may be hard to release, 02V227 (2000-02) belt retractors that may not stay locked, and 01V172 (2001) sun visor supports.
- 02V067 (2002) -- missing or loose steering gear bolts.
- 03V238 (2002-03) -- a faulty fuel tank pressure sensor that could lead to fuel leaking when you fill up, with a fire risk.
- 02V222 (2002-03) and 03V051 (2003) -- driver air bag inflator defects.
Other trouble spots and ratings
Consumer Guide's other notes are mostly 2000-specific: rear brake pads that hum, front pads that shake the steering wheel when warm, dash vents that close on high blower, and a horn that sticks or sounds by itself in the cold until the airbag module is replaced. NHTSA scores it lists for a 2000 sedan are 3 stars for the driver and 4 for the passenger in the frontal test, and 4 and 4 in the side test. IIHS had no rating page I could find for this generation.
If you're torn between this and the smaller sibling, our used Cadillac Seville guide covers the same engine family in a tighter, sportier package.
Before you hand over cash
Confirm the trim with our Cadillac VIN decoder, since a DTS badge is easy to add to a base car. Check the title on NMVTIS and read the full report for accidents and odometer gaps. A cheap old luxury sedan has usually changed hands several times, and every extra owner is one more chance for a rolled odometer or a washed title to slip in.
We sell CARFAX and AutoCheck reports as a licensed reseller and aren't affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Cadillac. Around mid October 2026, a guest report cost about $5.50, a member report about $4.50 and the pair roughly $6.75, against about $39.99 to $44.99 buying direct. Prices shift, so look at the checkout total before you pay.
