Renault Megane Buying Guide

The fourth-generation Megane arrived in July 2016 with 1.2 TCe 130 and 1.6 TCe 205 petrol engines plus 1.5 dCi 110 and 1.6 dCi 130 diesels, and a Sport Tourer estate followed six months later. Confirm the offered Renault Megane matches its paperwork, then book an inspection that covers its construction and fitted equipment.

I used Auto Express used Megane Mk4 guide when preparing this November 7, 2026 guide. Those sources describe the model, its known weak spots and its engineering, not the history of any single car for sale. So, the checks below turn that background into questions for a seller and a workshop; they do not assign a failure rate or current market value.

Confirm the engine, body and gearbox first

The fourth-generation Megane arrived in July 2016 with 1.2 TCe 130 and 1.6 TCe 205 petrol engines plus 1.5 dCi 110 and 1.6 dCi 130 diesels, and a Sport Tourer estate followed six months later. Auto Express is happy with the EDC automatic and would not steer buyers away from any version. Match the engine and body to the V5C and build data before comparing prices. The hot RS models need their own inspection, so do not judge one against a plain Dynamique Nav advert.

Ask for the cambelt invoice on a diesel

Every Megane needs a service every 12 months or 18,000 miles, with minor and major visits alternating. The review notes that the petrol engines are chain-driven, while the diesels have a cambelt due every six years or 90,000 miles. Ask for the invoice that shows when the belt was changed, not just a stamp. Brake fluid falls due every three years and coolant every five. If the paperwork stops short, price the belt job locally and fold it into your offer.

Test the handbrake, screen and kit list

Expression+ cars have a conventional lever, while every other trim got an electronic parking brake, so apply and release it several times on a slope. Our own long-term test car, described by Auto Express, had an infotainment malfunction, so pair your phone, run the navigation and restart the car to check that the portrait screen comes back cleanly. Compare the fitted equipment with the trim list in the review. Mid-spec cars should have automatic lights, rear sensors and dual-zone climate control.

Check the spare, the boot and the warranty date

The Megane came with a tyre inflation kit as standard, and a spare wheel was an extra-cost option, so lift the boot floor and see which one is there. The review quotes a 384-litre hatch boot, so bring your usual luggage or pushchair. Renault stretched the warranty to five years or 100,000 miles from late 2019, so ask a dealer whether any cover remains on the VIN. Ask for recall and campaign records at the same visit.

Put the VIN and title file beside the inspection

The physical chassis identifier must agree with the sale documents before a report is ordered. Use our VIN identity checks to organise that comparison and our imported-car report guide to understand why foreign history may be thin. Ask for the title, registration and service invoices, plus import papers if the car came from another country. NMVTIS offers a U.S. title-history route with defined coverage; it does not confirm mechanical condition or replace dealer service records. A fake PDF can disguise an ownership gap, so verify evidence through the issuing source rather than accepting a seller screenshot.

Agree the specialist work before leaving a deposit

Tell the shop which version and components it will see, then agree lift access, a controlled road test and a written description of limitations. Our pre-purchase inspection checklist helps frame the appointment, while NYC used-car guidance recommends an independent mechanic. Ask the specialist to separate immediate safety work from cosmetic preferences and optional upgrades. Look, a repair estimate is useful only if a supplier will actually provide the required part. Have the shop obtain a response for any known missing item.

Keep the offer conditional on the findings you care about. Put any seller repair promise in the purchase agreement. If the workshop cannot establish structural condition or a route to a needed safety part, defer the deal rather than inventing a discount. The final decision should reflect the documented car and your intended use, not a figure copied from a launch story.

We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Wholesale reports cost a few dollars; confirm current coverage and the total at checkout. A quiet report can miss unreported repairs. Keep the independent inspection even if the seller sends an impressive PDF.
