Used Subaru BRZ Buying Guide: 2.0 or 2.4, Recalls and Track Wear

A used Subaru BRZ is a good cheap sports car in mid October 2026 if you buy the generation you mean to: 2013-2020 cars use a 2.0-liter flat-four, 2022-on cars use a 2.4, and there is no 2021 model in the U.S. Assume any example has been driven hard, check clutch, tires, brakes and water leaks, close the valve spring, fuel pump and lamp recalls by VIN, and read the title history before you pay first-owner money for a car that may have spent weekends on track.

The BRZ shares its body and engine with the Scion FR-S, Toyota 86 and Toyota GR86, so recall notices and owner write-ups often lump them together. That helps when you are researching. It also means a BRZ listing can borrow a story that belongs to a twin, and the VIN is how you sort that out.

First gen or second gen

EPA's fueleconomy.gov BRZ listings run from 2013 to 2020, skip 2021 entirely, and pick up again for 2022. A "2021 BRZ" in an ad is a typo or a mistitled car, and either way you want to know which. For the current car, Car and Driver lists a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter making 228 hp and 184 lb-ft, a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive and a standard limited-slip differential, with the tS adding tuned suspension and bigger brakes. They also say the rear seats are best used for cargo, including a spare set of track tires. That is a hint about how some of these cars get used.

On older cars, the Driving.ca used guide by Justin Pritchard gives the most practical advice we found: assume the car needs brakes, tires, a clutch and a battery, assume the engine has been modified, then work backward. Start it from cold with the hood open, check the oil level first, and watch for smoke or a harsh tapping noise. He mentions leaky front engine covers on early cars, failed spark plugs and injectors that leave stored codes, a throw-out bearing that gets noisy as it wears, and a cricket-like chirp that can mean a failing fuel pump.

Water, lamps and the things sellers skip

Driving.ca also tells you to lift the trunk floor and look at the spare tire well. Moisture, rust or standing water there points to a leak from the spoiler holes, the taillamp seals or a sunroof, and he suggests moving on to another car if you find it. Look inside the headlamp and taillamp housings for condensation or haze, too. None of that shows in listing photos taken on a sunny afternoon, and a flood-damaged car can look the same way until the carpet comes up.

What the VIN decode shows

We ran sample patterns through NHTSA's free vPIC decoder on October 14, 2026. A 2013 JF1ZCAC1 pattern came back as a BRZ coupe with a 2.0-liter, naturally aspirated, built in Ota, Japan. On 2019 and 2020 patterns the engine note read 205 hp with the manual or 200 hp with the automatic, which is a quick way to check a seller who claims more. Second-generation cars switch to ZD in the fourth and fifth positions: a 2023 JF1ZDBE1 pattern decoded as a Limited with a 2.4 and a manual, while a 2022 JF1ZDBA1 pattern returned the 2.4 and rear-wheel drive but warned that some characters could not be decoded. Use the full 17-character VIN and compare it with the door jamb. Our Subaru VIN decoder guide walks through the rest.

Recalls to close

The big one for early cars is 18V-772, which covers 2013 BRZs (along with the Scion FR-S and some Imprezas) whose engine valve springs can fracture and stall the engine; dealers replace the springs. Driving.ca notes that early engine failures some owners reported may be tied to valve spring or injector problems, which is one more reason to confirm this campaign on a 2013 car. 21V-587 covers 2018-2019 BRZs with a low-pressure fuel pump that can fail and stall the car, and 18V-935 fixed 2018 cars whose rearview camera display could stay blank.

On the second generation, 23V-609 covers 2022 BRZ and GR86 cars whose rear turn signals can stop working intermittently; dealers replace both rear lamp assemblies. Then there is 12V-254, which only sent corrected owner's manuals to some 2013 owners about the passenger air bag system. It is a paperwork fix, but worth knowing about if it turns up. Our Subaru recall check by VIN walkthrough shows how to read the results.

Track days, crashes and the title

Honestly, the risk with a BRZ is rarely the engine alone. It is a cheap, light, rear-drive coupe that people learn to drive on, and some of those lessons end with a body shop invoice. A recall screen will not show that, or a salvage brand, or a rolled odometer. CARFAX says its reports draw on title, odometer, ownership and accident records. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us costs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, compared with roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail.
