Shopping a used Subaru WRX or STI in mid October 2026 means treating boost and modifications as the default risk: pick a generation that fits the budget, demand oil and timing-belt records, clear fuel-pump and lighting campaigns by VIN, then walk away from "stage 2" cars with no receipts.
We've seen plenty of "stock now" listings that still smell like race gas and run uneven compression. Car and Driver's current WRX overview pegs today's car at a 271-hp turbo flat-four with all-wheel drive and a six-speed manual or CVT. That is useful context for late VB cars, but the used market still mixes older EJ turbo cars, 2015-2021 VA WRX/STI models, and the current generation. Decode first with the free vPIC tool, then our Subaru VIN decoder so the chassis code matches the ad.
Generations and the mod tax
Older hatch and sedan WRX/STI cars can be bargains until the turbo, clutch, and ringlands tell a different story. Tuned cars fail in expensive ways when someone chased boost without supporting fueling and oil discipline. Ask for a stack of invoices, not a folder of Instagram screenshots. Cold-start knock, blue smoke, and a clutch that engages at the floor are not "character." They are reasons to leave.
MotorTrend's WRX pages help with trim and road-test notes across recent years, and the 2021 WRX/STI coverage is a solid snapshot of the last VA STI era. For a daily, a lightly optioned later WRX with a documented stock tune often beats a louder STI that lived at the drag strip. If you want STI hardware, budget a Subaru-specialist compression and leakdown check before you fall in love with the wing.
Recalls and salt-belt brake lines
NHTSA campaign 21V-587 covers certain 2018-2019 WRX (and other Subaru) vehicles where the low-pressure fuel pump can fail and stall the engine. 14V-311 is the older salt-state brake-line corrosion recall that includes 2008-2014 Impreza WRX/STI cars registered in listed northern and salt-belt states -- longer stopping distances if lines leak. Separately, 2015-2021 WRX cars had a backup-light switch corrosion campaign that can kill reverse lights and the rearview camera image; confirm that one by VIN even if the PDF is not in your pocket.
Run the VIN through NHTSA and through our Subaru recall check by VIN guide, then ask the dealer for a same-day printout. A history report is not a substitute for open-campaign status, and a seller who "thinks it was done" is not a closed campaign.
Title brands, salvage sports cars, and fake PDFs
WRX cars get crashed, flooded, and title-washed more than people admit. Match the dash VIN, door sticker, and title. Pull your own report instead of accepting a blurry phone PDF. CARFAX draws on title, odometer, ownership, and accident data when it is reported. We have also seen curbstoners flip "clean" WRXs after a weekend rebuild -- treat private-party urgency as a warning, not a discount.
As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, compared with roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller and are not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. Put what you save into a specialist inspection; our pre-purchase inspection cost piece is the practical next read.
WRX or something louder?
If the shopping list also includes a Mustang, keep the paper trail identical. Our used Ford Mustang buying guide is the RWD foil; for Subaru shoppers who might settle into a wagon instead, the used Subaru Outback buying guide covers a calmer AWD path. For the WRX itself: decode, clear campaigns, verify stock-or-documented mods, read a real report, inspect, then negotiate.
On the drive, hold a constant throttle in a high gear and listen for knock, then try a gentle pull through the midrange without floorboarding it in a parking lot. Glazed rotors, a spongy clutch, and a turbo that whistled last week but is silent today are all reasons to slow down. A WRX that needs "just a tune and tires" usually needs a wallet first.
