Used Toyota FJ Cruiser Buying Guide: Frame Rust, 4WD Types and Recalls

A used Toyota FJ Cruiser, sold in the U.S. for 2007 through 2014, is a tough 4.0-liter V6 truck that still costs real money, so the inspection matters more than the badge. Get under it and look for frame rust, check the inner front fenders on a 2007-2009 truck for bulging or cracks, and confirm by VIN that Toyota's seat belt recall on 2007-2013 trucks was done. The front belts on an FJ anchor in the rear half-doors, and that's what the recall is about.

I read NHTSA's recall records for every FJ year on Saturday night, October 17, 2026, alongside Toyota's press releases and Car and Driver's road tests and its 2024 used-buyer feature. Honestly, the thing that stuck with me is the prices: these trucks are 12 to 19 model years old and some still sell like they're nearly new.

What you're actually buying

Car and Driver's What to Buy feature says the FJ rides on an altered version of the 4Runner's frame with a wheelbase 3.9 inches shorter, a 183.9-inch body and up to 9.6 inches of ground clearance. It also says the upright windshield, massive C-pillars and small rear window work against outward vision on and off the road. Believe that one. On a test drive, try a lane change and a parallel park before you fall for the paint.

Toyota's November 2013 release confirmed 2014 as the last U.S. model year and announced the Trail Teams Ultimate Edition, limited to 2,500 trucks, in Heritage Blue with TRD Bilstein shocks and a quarter-inch aluminum front skid plate. If you want a newer body-on-frame Toyota with four conventional doors, our used Toyota 4Runner guide covers the trucks that share its bones. Want the roof off? Read the used Jeep Wrangler guide, since C/D says the FJ's off-road ability is comparable but you give up the open-top driving.

Engine, gearbox and which 4WD

Every FJ has a 4.0-liter V6. Car and Driver lists 239 hp for 2007-09, 258 for 2010 and 260 for 2011-14. The transmission decides the four-wheel-drive system, which a lot of sellers get wrong in listings. Toyota's 2014 FJ Cruiser release says the six-speed manual comes with full-time 4WD through a Torsen limited-slip center differential that you can lock, while the 4x4 automatic gets a part-time system. An electronic locking rear differential was standard with the manual and optional on the automatic. There were also two-wheel-drive FJs, so don't assume.

Car and Driver's 2006 first drive adds that on the automatic you have to stop to select low range. None of this is a defect. It just changes which truck you want, and a five-minute look at the shifter and transfer case lever settles it faster than the ad copy will.

Rust, fenders and what these sell for

C/D names two big weak spots: rusting frames, which can hit any year, and bulging or cracked inner front fenders, mostly on 2007-09 trucks. Bring a flashlight and a screwdriver, and poke the frame rails near the rear wheels and the crossmembers. A fresh coat of undercoating on a northern truck should make you more careful, not less. Our post on whether CARFAX shows rust explains why a history report usually won't help you here.

On value, C/D says the FJ holds its money remarkably well and that the TRD Special Edition, Trail Teams and Ultimate Edition trucks carry premiums. The sales it quoted, from 2024 auctions, ran from $17,500 for a 2007 TRD Special Edition with 136,000 miles to $43,500 for a 2014 with 9,000 miles. That was 2024, so use it as a sense of scale, not a price guide. The used Nissan Xterra is the cheaper body-on-frame alternative if the numbers scare you off.

FJ recalls to clear by VIN

  • 13V098, 2007-2013: the front seat belt retractors mount in the rear access door panels, which can crack if the doors are slammed hard for years, letting a retractor come loose.
  • 15V081, 2014: trucks built August 7-20, 2013, may have a badly welded intermediate steering shaft. Dealers replace the shaft.
  • 14V539, 2014 Ultimate Edition: the special suspension was fitted at vehicle processing centers, and some front ball joint and lower arm bolts may not have been torqued right.
  • 20V012, 2014: a low-pressure fuel pump that can fail and stall the engine.
  • Dealer accessories: 13V163 covers Toyota auxiliary driving lamp kits on 2007-2013 trucks, and 12E046 covers TRD brake kits. Several regional Southeast Toyota and Gulf States Toyota campaigns are listed too.

Run the VIN on Toyota's recall page, and see our Toyota recall check by VIN post for reading the result.

Before you hand over the money

Decode the VIN in NHTSA's vPIC tool and compare it with the title and door jamb; our Toyota VIN decoder guide walks through the digits. Check NMVTIS for salvage brands. A lot of FJs were lifted and wheeled, so ask who did the lift, look for dents in the rocker panels and skid plates, and expect trail damage to stay off any report.

Pull your own history report too, and don't trust a screenshot texted by the seller. CarVins is a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller and isn't affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Toyota. In mid October 2026 a guest report was around $5.50, members paid closer to $4.50, and the bundle of both ran about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Confirm at checkout, because that's where the price is set.
