Vauxhall Signum Buying Guide

A Signum is worth considering when rear passenger comfort matters more than carrying five adults. Confirm the offered Vauxhall Signum matches its paperwork, then book an inspection that covers its construction and fitted equipment.

I used RAC used-car review when preparing this November 7, 2026 guide. Those sources describe the model engineering and historical context, not every surviving chassis. So, the checks below turn that background into questions for a seller and a workshop; they do not assign a failure rate or current market value.

Buy the rear-seat layout you actually need

A Signum is worth considering when rear passenger comfort matters more than carrying five adults. RAC explains that it uses a stretched Vectra platform and works best with four occupants. The outer rear seats slide and recline, while the centre position is a compromise. Sit your regular passengers in the actual car before discussing an offer. Move both outer seats through their travel and check each latch with the car parked. A generous wheelbase cannot compensate for a broken runner or an uncomfortable centre seat.

Identify the engine before comparing prices

Engine identity changes the Signum ownership proposition considerably. RAC lists petrol and diesel choices, including the 2.0 turbo petrol, 2.2 direct-injection petrol and several CDTi diesels. It dates the arrival of the 1.9 CDTi versions to 2004 and a major facelift to 2005. Compare engine numbers and service invoices with the registration. Ask a workshop familiar with that exact engine to specify its maintenance requirements. A badge or replacement front panel alone cannot establish which version you are buying.

Check the Travel Assistant rather than admiring it

The optional rear console deserves a complete demonstration. RAC describes the Travel Assistant with folding tables, storage, a cooling compartment and a power outlet, and mentions rattles. Check what is fitted, which pieces are missing and whether the electrical functions work. Look inside overhead storage and test each catch. Put any missing removable equipment into the written sale description, because a seller may remove it before collection. Price a replacement before assigning extra value to this unusual cabin.

Treat the period reliability verdict as background

A favourable early review does not settle the condition of an ageing Signum. RAC reported few significant faults when its review was written; that was a snapshot of much younger cars. Ask for a cold start, an engine-specific diagnostic scan and a check of cooling, charging and gearbox operation. Have the inspector look underneath for corrosion and collision repairs. Request current parts quotes for the engine and equipment fitted rather than using the old review prices. An unexplained warning light needs diagnosis before a deposit.

Put the identity and import file beside the inspection

The physical chassis identifier must agree with the sale documents before a report is ordered. Use our VIN identity checks to organise that comparison and our imported-car report guide to understand why foreign history may be thin. Ask for original registration, import and ownership papers as applicable. NMVTIS offers a U.S. title-history route with defined coverage; it does not certify a bespoke build or replace foreign records. A fake PDF can disguise an ownership gap, so verify evidence through the issuing source rather than accepting a seller screenshot.

Agree the specialist work before leaving a deposit

Tell the shop which version and components it will see, then agree lift access, a controlled road test and a written description of limitations. Our pre-purchase inspection checklist helps frame the appointment, while NYC used-car guidance recommends an independent mechanic. Ask the specialist to separate immediate safety work from cosmetic preferences and optional upgrades. Look, a repair estimate is useful only if a supplier will actually provide the required part. Have the shop obtain a response for any known missing item.

Keep the offer conditional on the findings you care about. Put any seller repair promise in the purchase agreement. If the workshop cannot establish structural condition or a route to a needed safety part, defer the deal rather than inventing a discount. The final decision should reflect the documented car and your intended use, not a figure copied from a launch story.

We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Wholesale reports cost a few dollars; confirm current coverage and the total at checkout. A quiet report can miss unreported repairs. Keep the independent inspection even if the seller sends an impressive PDF.
