Used Volkswagen Tiguan Buying Guide: Generations and Recalls

A used Volkswagen Tiguan is still a sensible compact crossover if you match the generation to the seat count you need and clear the VIN on the camera and steering campaigns that hit that year. On 2018 trucks of the second generation, that means the steering rack mounting bolt recall. On 2022-2024 models, it means the rearview camera control unit software. Get those answered before you argue about third-row usefulness.

The Tiguan badge covers more than one shape. In mid October 2026 you can find second-generation (2018-2024) examples with an optional third row on the same lot as the latest redesign that seats five. We pulled Tiguan recall filings from NHTSA on October 13, 2026, and they sort more cleanly once you decode the year with our Volkswagen VIN decoder.

Which Tiguan you are looking at

Per Car and Driver's 2018 review, the second-generation Tiguan arrived stretched nearly a foot so it could haul more cargo or fit an optional third row, sharing the squarer look of the Atlas. Current gas Tiguans, per Car and Driver's latest Tiguan overview, seat five, keep a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder at about 201 hp on lower trims, and for 2026 add a SEL R-Line Turbo with about 268 hp. That is a different animal from a used Audi Q5, so do not treat Q5 advice as a full substitute even though both sit in the Volkswagen Group family.

Recalls to clear by VIN

25V-082 covers about 29,569 vehicles including certain 2022-2024 Tiguan models. An error in the camera control unit at startup may keep the rearview image from displaying. Dealers update camera control unit software. Volkswagen owner letters went out November 18, 2025, with a second notice once remedy parts were ready. A related redo, 26V-321, covers a small set of 2024 Tiguans previously repaired under 25V-082 that still need updated software. Our brand page on Volkswagen recall checks by VIN shows how to read those status lines.

On 2018 Tiguans, 26V-590 covers about 208,724 vehicles including certain 2018 Tiguan, 2018-2019 Atlas, and 2019-2021 Audi Q3 models. A steering rack mounting bolt may corrode and break so the steering rack housing can break. Dealers replace the right-side steering rack mounting bolt. Owner letters were expected around November 10, 2026. On 2025 Tiguans, 26V-587 covers about 49,958 vehicles whose body control module software may reset, which can stall the engine or lose lighting and the rearview camera. Dealers update BCM software. Letters went out October 6, 2026. 25V-854 covers about 3,138 2025 Tiguans whose passenger occupant detection wiring may deactivate the front passenger air bag when the seat is occupied.

CPO, private sale and history cost

Volkswagen certified pre-owned can add inspection and warranty coverage, but it does not erase open recalls. Still demand a dealer printout. Consumer Reports' Tiguan coverage is useful for ownership patterns once the VIN is clean, and IIHS rates the 2024 Tiguan for crash-test context. Private sales are cheaper, so budget an independent inspection and a look at the steering rack area on 2018 examples. CARFAX says its reports show title brands, odometer readings, ownership, and reported accidents, and our guide on how to read a CARFAX report helps. As of mid October 2026, CARFAX through us is about $5.50 guest or $4.50 member, bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. A flood-state Tiguan with a new cargo cover and a "camping SUV" story is still a title problem first.
