Achieva Credit Union does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a requirement on its public rates page. It advertises new and used auto loans as low as 5.15% APR, with an example payment of $450.57 on a $15,000 loan for 36 months. Because that quote assumes the car matches the paperwork, a history check before you sign protects you more than it protects the credit union.
What Achieva's page says
I read Achieva Credit Union's rates page on Nov. 5, 2026. Under auto rates it listed:
- New and Used Auto APR as low as 5.15%.
- An example: $15,000 at 5.15% APR for 36 months equals a $450.57 monthly payment.
- APR based on loan term, credit and collateral qualifications.
- Commercial-use vehicles not eligible.
- Internal refinances may carry a $200 refinance fee; indirect auto loans financed through Achieva in the past 12 months are not eligible for refinancing.
The page said rates are subject to change without notice, all loans are subject to approval, and membership qualifications apply. Boat, RV and camper rates were listed separately as low as 7.15% APR and are not the auto product.
Does Achieva require a CARFAX?
Nothing on the rates page I read required a CARFAX, AutoCheck or other vehicle history report as a condition of the auto loan. Underwriters can still ask for documents that are not listed on a marketing page. Ask your loan officer what they need for a used car, including any history report, appraisal or inspection.
Why you still want a history report
A low payment on a salvage or flood car is still a bad deal. Pull a report for accidents, title brands, odometer gaps and prior owners before funding. Our how to read a CARFAX guide and NMVTIS versus CARFAX comparison show what each source catches. Branded titles need a harder look; see credit union branded title checklist.
Dealer car or private sale
Ask whether Achieva will fund a private-party purchase, whether it pays the seller directly and which documents it wants. Private sales are where thin titles and odometer stories show up. Dealer deals can still hide prior brands if you only read the window sticker.
How to check the car yourself before you sign
- Match the VIN on the dash, door jamb and title.
- Run NHTSA recalls and a vehicle history report on that VIN.
- Check NMVTIS for brands.
- Budget a pre-purchase inspection on older or high-mile cars; see pre-purchase inspection cost.
Questions to ask Achieva
- Do you require a vehicle history report for used cars?
- What APR and payment apply to this VIN, price and term?
- What LTV will you allow?
- Will you fund a private-party purchase, and what paperwork do you need?
Rate math that bites buyers
The 5.15% example is a 36-month loan on $15,000. Stretch the term, raise the LTV or bring thinner credit, and the payment and total interest move. Ask Achieva to quote the APR and payment on the exact VIN and price you are buying, not on a brochure example.
Membership and refinance limits
Achieva is a credit union, so membership qualifications apply before funding. Ask what share deposit you need and if your address or employer group qualifies. The rates page also flags that commercial-use vehicles are not eligible and that recent indirect loans through Achieva may not refinance there for twelve months.
If you are refinancing a dealer contract, ask whether the $200 internal refinance fee applies and whether stretching the term raises total interest even when the APR drops. A lower payment is not always a lower cost.
Keep the $450.57 example in mind as a reference point only. Ask Achieva for a payment quote on your price, term and credit tier, then compare that number to a dealer finance offer on the same VIN before you sign either one.
Also ask whether Achieva wants an inspection on private-party cars and who pays for it. A cheap inspection beats a surprise after the lien is filed on a car that looked fine in a dark parking lot late at night.
What the report costs
As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
