AM General Recall Check by VIN: Hummer OEM Campaigns

AM General OEM Hummers carry real NHTSA campaigns for fuel, brakes, cruise control and more. Run the VIN before you buy a civilian H1-era truck.

AM General Recall Check by VIN: Hummer OEM Campaigns

An AM General recall check by VIN is the right first step on a civilian Hummer built before GM's later H2/H3 era. When I queried NHTSA on Nov. 5, 2026, AM General Hummer model years in the mid-1990s through 2000 returned multiple campaigns covering fuel delivery, accelerator and cruise control, brake hoses, turn-signal switches and some equipment notices. These trucks are old, heavy and often modified, which makes incomplete campaigns easy to miss in a glossy ad.

How to look up the VIN

Read the dash VIN and the door or body sticker. Enter the VIN at NHTSA recalls. Decode it with NHTSA vPIC to confirm AM General as the make rather than a later GM Hummer. Our NHTSA recall check by VIN guide shows the free path. Save the result with today's date.

Do not rely on a seller saying "military surplus, no recalls." Civilian AM General Hummers appear in NHTSA's passenger-vehicle style recall data for several years.

Campaign themes NHTSA returned in my Nov. 5, 2026 checks

  • 94V164000: oil pressure switch failures that can cut power to the electric fuel pump on affected trucks.
  • 94V162000 and related mid-1990s notices: additional fuel or related system concerns by VIN.
  • 95V023000: cruise control cable water accumulation that can cause issues in freezing temperatures.
  • 96V049000: accelerator pedal shaft coating incompatible with the bronze bushing, which can affect pedal feel or return.
  • 00V005000: flexible brake line chafing on some late-1990s and 2000 trucks.
  • 01V336000: turn signal switch cancellation pin failures on some 1998-2000 trucks.
  • 95V161000, 96V178002 and equipment notices such as 06E043000 and 07E088000: additional lighting or aftermarket filter campaigns that can attach by equipment or VIN.

Exact coverage is VIN-specific. A 1995 truck and a 2000 truck do not share one list. Run the VIN rather than shopping from this summary alone.

History reports vs NHTSA

A paid history report may show recall lines, delay them, or omit campaigns a dealer never reported closed. Use NHTSA as the open-campaign source of truth and read NHTSA recall vs CARFAX. For Hummer-branded later trucks, also see our Hummer recall check by VIN when the VIN decodes to GM-era H2/H3 products instead of AM General.

Cross-check title brands with NMVTIS. These trucks get flood and salvage brands after off-road and storm losses that ads call "patina."

Inspection priorities when a campaign is open

  • Fuel delivery and idle quality if pump or switch campaigns appear.
  • Brake hose routing and wear if 00V005000 appears.
  • Pedal return and cruise behavior on cold and wet days for the cable and bushing campaigns.
  • Turn signal canceling behavior on late-1990s trucks.
  • Frame rust, lift geometry and tire age, which are not recalls but end trips just as fast.

Pay for a pre-purchase inspection with a shop that has seen HMMWV-derived civilians. Modified brake lines after a lift can recreate chafing even when an old campaign was closed.

When to walk

Walk from an open fuel or brake campaign the seller will not address, a VIN that does not decode cleanly, a branded title priced as clean, or a seller who blocks a lift and hose inspection. An AM General Hummer is a commitment. Incomplete safety campaigns should not be part of the charm.

Modified trucks complicate recall completion. A lifted Hummer may need brake hose replacements that differ from the original campaign parts. Keep invoices that list the VIN and the campaign number when a shop closes an open notice. Future buyers and state inspectors ask for that paper.

Equipment campaigns such as certain aftermarket filter notices can appear beside OEM campaigns in NHTSA results. Read the component line so you know whether the issue is a factory fuel pump switch or a later parts bulletin. Walking away from an unrelated equipment line may be unnecessary; ignoring a brake hose campaign is not.

Before you travel to see a remote seller, ask for a windshield VIN photo and run NHTSA at home. A truck that already shows open fuel or brake campaigns should come with a repair plan and a price that reflects unfinished safety work.

What the report costs

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
