A modern Bentley VIN starts with SCB on passenger cars such as the Continental and Flying Spur, or SJA on multipurpose vehicles such as the Bentayga. Positions 4-8 carry model and engine clues, 9 is the check digit, 10 is the model year, and 11 is the plant. Crewe, England keeps showing up on the cars we decoded. Decode it on vPIC, then run recalls and a history report before you wire a deposit on a low-volume luxury SUV or coupe.
We ran Bentley patterns through NHTSA's free vPIC decoder in mid October 2026 because six-figure classified ads still mix Bentayga and Continental codes, and because Volkswagen Group platform talk does not change the Bentley WMI. Bentley's own facts page says modern cars are designed and built at Crewe. New to the 17 positions? Start with how to decode a VIN. For open campaigns after the decode, use our Bentley recall check by VIN.
Positions 1-3: SCB cars, SJA Bentayga MPVs
vPIC maps SCB to Bentley Motors Limited passenger cars and SJA to Bentley multipurpose vehicles. A clean 2017 Bentayga VIN, SJAAC2ZV5HC011769, decoded to Crewe, England, a five-door SUV/MPV, gasoline, with twelve cylinders. A 2021 Bentayga V8 VIN, SJAAM2ZV3MC032398, returned Crewe with all-wheel drive, about 4.0 liters and eight cylinders. A 2019 Continental GT pattern starting SCBCU7ZA decoded to Crewe as a coupe with a 6.0-liter twelve and GT trim. So a listing that calls every Bentley a "Continental" while the VIN starts SJA is already wrong on the badge.
Positions 4-8: Continental, Flying Spur, Bentayga and the engine field
The middle block encodes model family, body and engine. On our Bentayga samples, vPIC filled trim as V8 or Speed and displacement as roughly 4.0 or 6.0 liters depending on the car. A Flying Spur pattern starting SCBBR9ZA came back as a four-door sedan with all-wheel drive, still Crewe. Honestly, shared VW Group hardware shows up in the engineering story, which is useful context and still does not make the VIN a Porsche or Audi WMI. For cross-shopping background only, see our Porsche VIN decoder. A blank model field means you verify the door jamb and build sheet yourself.
Positions 9-11: check digit, year and plant
Position 9 is the check digit under 49 CFR 565.15. The Bentayga samples above decoded with clean check digits. Position 10 is the model year (H was 2017, K was 2019, M was 2021 in our runs). Position 11 pointed at Crewe across the cars we checked. Match dash plate, door jamb and title before you argue about Mulliner options that never left the configurator.
Recalls that follow Bentley VINs
Always run the full VIN. Low volume does not mean low recall risk. NHTSA recall 23V-592 covers certain 2017-2023 Bentayga vehicles whose fuel supply module wiring can overheat and melt the flange, resulting in a fuel leak. 22V-743 covers certain 2021-2022 Bentayga vehicles whose rearview camera image may show blank because of infotainment software. Look, a fuel smell on a Bentayga test drive is a stop-the-deal issue until the campaign printout is clean. Our NHTSA recall check by VIN guide explains incomplete versus completed status.
We've seen exotic-lot PDFs that quietly omit open fuel campaigns. Pull the recall check yourself.
After the decode: history, and what it costs
For model context, Car and Driver's Bentayga page and Consumer Reports on Bentley are useful starting points. None of a VIN decode shows salvage brands, odometer jumps, auction damage or insurance claims. Those come from the feeds CARFAX describes. Pull your own copy. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. On a car this expensive, a seller PDF with no VIN printed on it is noise.
