Maserati VIN Decoder: ZAM Sedans and ZN6 Levante Codes

A Maserati passenger-car VIN usually starts with ZAM on sedans such as the Ghibli and Quattroporte, while Levante SUVs often carry ZN6. Positions 4-8 carry model and engine clues, 9 is the check digit, 10 is the model year, and 11 is the plant. Grugliasco, Mirafiori and Modena showed up on the cars we decoded. Decode it on vPIC, then run recalls and a history report before you buy.

We ran Maserati patterns through NHTSA's free vPIC decoder in mid October 2026 because listings still paste an Alfa Romeo WMI onto a Ghibli ad, and because Stellantis siblings share some powertrains without sharing the same codes. Maserati is part of Stellantis with Alfa Romeo, but the VIN stays Maserati-specific. Our Alfa Romeo VIN decoder covers ZAR and ZAS cars separately. New to the 17 positions? Start with how to decode a VIN. For open campaigns, use our Maserati recall check by VIN.

Positions 1-3: ZAM cars, ZN6 Levante MPVs

vPIC maps ZAM to Maserati S.p.A. passenger cars and ZN6 to Maserati multipurpose vehicles. A clean 2020 Ghibli pattern starting ZAM57YTA decoded to Grugliasco, Italy, a four-door sedan, all-wheel drive, a 3.0-liter six and M157 series notes. A 2021 Levante pattern starting ZN661YUA returned Mirafiori, Italy, as an AWD SUV/MPV with a 3.0-liter six and M161 series. An MC20-class pattern with a Modena plant city pointed at the historic Modena site. So if a seller swears every Trident car "came from Modena," believe the plant field instead.

Positions 4-8: Ghibli, Quattroporte, Levante, MC20 and the engine field

The middle block encodes model family, body, restraints and engine. On our Ghibli and Levante runs, displacement filled in as 3.0 liters with six cylinders. A Quattroporte pattern starting ZAM56RTA pointed at Grugliasco with sedan body notes. Honestly, some twin-turbo V-6 hardware overlaps the Alfa Romeo story, which is useful context and still does not make the VIN an Alfa WMI. Car and Driver's Levante page is a decent model overview after you finish the decode. A blank model field means you verify the door jamb and window sticker yourself.

Positions 9-11: check digit, year and plant

Position 9 is the check digit in 49 CFR 565.15. Our Ghibli and Levante samples decoded with clean check digits. Position 10 is the model year (L was 2020, M was 2021 in our runs). Position 11 is the plant. Grugliasco showed on Ghibli and Quattroporte patterns, Mirafiori on Levante, and Modena on MC20-class filings. Match dash plate, door jamb and title before you argue about Trofeo badges.

Recalls that follow Maserati VINs

Always run the full VIN. Campaigns are tied to build windows, not the year badge alone. NHTSA recall 25V-098 covers certain 2021-2024 Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante vehicles (plus other Maserati models) whose radio software may stop the rearview camera image from displaying. 24V-269 covers certain 2021-2022 Ghibli and Quattroporte cars whose fuel line sensor housing may crack and leak fuel. Look, a fuel smell or a blank reverse camera on a used Maserati is not a "sort it after delivery" purchase. Our NHTSA recall check by VIN guide explains incomplete versus completed status.

We've seen exotic-lot PDFs that quietly omit open fuel and camera campaigns. Pull the recall check yourself.

After the decode: history, and what it costs

For ownership context, Consumer Reports on Maserati is a useful starting point. None of a VIN decode shows salvage brands, odometer jumps, auction damage or insurance claims. Those come from the feeds CARFAX describes. Pull your own copy. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian.
